What is truth – and how do we know when we’ve landed in error? These questions sound simple, but they sit at the very heart of Western philosophy. For centuries, thinkers have wrestled with the problem of distinguishing what is the case from what merely appears to be. The answers they’ve proposed have shaped how we understand knowledge itself: where it comes from, how reliable it is, and what exactly goes wrong when we believe something false. The journey from ancient Greece to modern epistemology is, in many ways, a story about navigating the narrow passage between truth and error.

What truth and error actually mean
Before we can ask how to find truth or avoid error, we need to know what these terms mean in a philosophical sense. Epistemology, the branch of philosophy concerned with knowledge, treats truth and error not as casual opposites but as precise logical categories. A belief or statement is true when it accurately reflects reality. It is false – it constitutes an error – when it does not.
This sounds straightforward, but defining it precisely took centuries of philosophical work. According to the Internet Encyclopedia of Philosophy, a proposition is true when there exists a fact that corresponds to it. Error, then, is not simply ignorance – it is a positive mismatch between what we believe and how things actually are. This distinction matters because it means error is not neutral; it is a failed claim about reality.
Epistemologists study the concepts of belief, truth, and justification to understand the nature of knowledge, investigating sources of justification such as perception, introspection, memory, reason, and testimony. The relationship between truth and error is baked into this investigation from the start: every attempt to justify a belief is an attempt to avoid being wrong.
The correspondence theory: truth as a mirror of reality
The correspondence theory of truth is the oldest and most intuitive account in Western philosophy. It holds that the truth or falsity of a statement is determined solely by how it relates to reality – whether it accurately describes the world as it is. The two oldest theories of truth in Western philosophy, those of Plato and Aristotle, are both correspondence theories, and the view remains the most widely held baseline position in epistemology today.
Aristotle stated it plainly in his Metaphysics: to say that what is, is not – or that what is not, is – is a falsehood. To say that what is, is, and what is not, is not, is true. As the Stanford Encyclopedia of Philosophy notes, this definition ties truth directly to reality, making falsehood not just an absence of truth but a positive failure of correspondence.
The medieval philosopher Thomas Aquinas gave this idea its most famous Latin formulation: Veritas est adaequatio rei et intellectus – truth is the adequation of thing and intellect. A judgment is true when it conforms to external reality. This version of the theory shaped centuries of scholastic philosophy and continued to influence early modern thinkers including Descartes, Spinoza, Locke, and Leibniz.
In the twentieth century, Bertrand Russell gave correspondence theory a more rigorous formulation: a belief is true when there is a corresponding fact, and false when there is no corresponding fact. This emphasis on facts as the corresponding portions of reality, alongside a more serious concern with how falsehood works, distinguished modern versions of the theory from ancient precursors.
The problem of falsehood
Correspondence theory handles truth well enough, but falsehood is philosophically trickier. If truth is a matter of a statement matching a fact in the world, what exactly does a false statement correspond to? There is no fact that makes it the case that the earth is flat – so what is the false statement about? Plato raised this difficulty clearly: how can we even think or say what is not the case? If false thought is thought of nothing, then it seems impossible. If it is thought of something real, then it seems to be true. This puzzle drove much of ancient logic and directly shaped the development of subject-predicate analysis in Aristotelian thought.
Two paths to knowledge: rationalism and empiricism
Once philosophers established that truth corresponds to reality and error does not, the next question became urgent: how do we get at reality in the first place? The history of Western epistemology is largely defined by two competing answers.
The rationalist response
Rationalism is the epistemological view that regards reason as the chief source and test of knowledge – a methodology in which the criterion of truth is not sensory but intellectual and deductive. Rationalists hold that reality has an inherently logical structure and that the mind can grasp certain truths directly, without needing to verify them through experience.
Renรฉ Descartes is the paradigm figure here. Disturbed by how easily the senses mislead, Descartes embarked on a method of radical doubt – systematically questioning every belief that could be doubted, to find what remained certain. Descartes deduced that a rational pursuit of truth should doubt every belief about sensory reality, since conscious sense experience can be the cause of illusions. What survived his doubt was the bare fact of his own thinking: cogito ergo sum – “I think, therefore I am.” From this single certain foundation, he tried to rebuild knowledge on purely rational grounds, immune to perceptual error.
The strength of this approach is its certainty. Rationalism looks for principles independent of human sensory perception, providing foundations for knowledge that are self-evident or internally justified without depending on experience. Mathematical truths – that the angles of a triangle sum to 180 degrees, or that 2 + 2 = 4 – hold regardless of what anyone observes. They are not subject to the kind of perceptual error that makes a straight stick look bent in water.
The empiricist response
Empiricism takes the opposite view: all knowledge ultimately comes from sensory experience. John Locke, George Berkeley, and David Hume each argued, in different ways, that the mind begins as a blank slate and is shaped entirely by what we perceive. Naรฏve empiricism holds that ideas and theories need to be tested against reality and accepted or rejected on the basis of how well they correspond to observed facts – this is empiricism’s own version of the correspondence theory.
The challenge for empiricists is that perception is fallible. As Bertrand Russell pointed out, lighting conditions, viewing angle, and even the tint of one’s glasses can all alter how an object appears. What we see is constantly changing, while the object itself presumably is not. If our senses can mislead us so easily, how do we build reliable knowledge from them?
Locke’s answer was to accept degrees of probability rather than demanding perfect certainty. Much of what we know is inductive – generalised from experience – and inductive reasoning is never as secure as deductive reasoning. But Locke thought that was acceptable. Knowledge did not need to be infallible; it needed to be good enough to guide action and belief responsibly.
The paradox at the heart of perception
Here is where the discussion becomes genuinely paradoxical. Rationalists argued that we should base knowledge on reason rather than perception precisely because perception is error-prone. Yet perception remains indispensable for detecting those very errors. We notice that the stick looks bent in water because we look at it again from a different angle. We correct our impression that the sun is the size of a coin by reasoning from what our eyes tell us about the sky. Science frequently teaches us that things are not in reality the way they appear to the senses – but it teaches us this, in part, through further and more careful observation.
The problem of perception is created precisely by the phenomena of perceptual illusion and hallucination: if these kinds of error are possible, how can perceptual experience enable direct perception of the world? Yet this same problem reveals that we can identify illusions – which means perception, despite its fallibility, remains our primary tool for error-correction.
As Britannica explains, the existence of visual aberrations, illusions, and other anomalies shows that one cannot always be sure of apprehending physical objects through perception alone. All that can be certain is that one is aware of an appearance of some sort. Whether that appearance corresponds to anything in the external world is always an open question. And yet – that very uncertainty is itself detected through perception and reasoning working together.
Kant’s attempted synthesis
Immanuel Kant saw this tension clearly and tried to resolve it by showing that neither pure reason nor pure sensory experience alone could deliver knowledge. Kant’s transcendental idealism combines sensory input and inborn concepts into a unified account of how we understand the world. He argued that while experience provides the raw material of knowledge, the mind’s own structures shape how that material is organised and interpreted. As he famously put it: percepts without concepts are blind, and concepts without percepts are empty.
Kant drew a distinction between phenomena – the world as it appears to us – and noumena – the world as it is in itself. We cannot know the latter directly. What we can know is experience structured by the mind’s categories. This means that both rationalists and empiricists were partly right: reason organises experience, and experience gives reason its content. Error arises when we overstep – when reason claims to know what lies beyond all possible experience, or when we mistake a perceptual appearance for unmediated reality.
Justification: the bridge between belief and truth
For a belief to count as knowledge rather than lucky guessing, it is not enough for it to be true. It must also be justified – formed in the right kind of way. The goal of our belief-forming practices is to obtain truth while avoiding error, and justification is the feature of beliefs formed in ways that best pursue this goal. This is why both rationalists and empiricists, despite their differences, were concerned with justification: both wanted to distinguish genuine knowledge from mere true belief arrived at by accident.
The traditional analysis defines knowledge as justified true belief. A belief must be held, must be true, and must be supported by sufficient evidence or reasoning. Plato’s epistemology was an attempt to understand what it was to know, and how knowledge – unlike mere true opinion – is good for the knower. This framework has guided Western epistemology ever since, even as later philosophers like Edmund Gettier challenged it by showing that a belief can be both justified and true without constituting genuine knowledge.
What this means for the relationship between truth and error is significant. Error is not simply a matter of believing something false. It is a matter of failing to meet the standards our belief-forming processes are supposed to meet. A person who believes the right thing for the wrong reasons is, epistemically speaking, still in error – even if they happen to be correct. Truth, in the fullest epistemic sense, requires not just correspondence to reality but the right kind of rational pathway to that correspondence.
The ongoing tension
Western philosophy has never fully resolved the tension between reason and perception as sources of truth. Epistemic theories of truth – verificationism, perspectivism, pragmatism – all attempt in different ways to cash out what it means for a belief to be true, and each has been challenged. Correspondence theory remains compelling in its simplicity but faces deep questions about what “facts” are and how statements hook onto them. Rationalism gives us certainty but struggles to explain how pure reason connects to a world it never directly touches. Empiricism keeps us grounded in experience but must constantly contend with the fallibility of the senses.
What remains clear is that truth and error are not merely abstract concerns for academics. Every time we form a belief, weigh evidence, or correct a mistaken impression, we are navigating the same terrain that Plato, Aristotle, Descartes, Locke, Hume, and Kant mapped before us. The paradox – that the very faculty most prone to error is also our most fundamental tool for detecting it – is not a weakness of epistemology. It is its central, irreducible challenge.
