What does it mean to truly know something? At first glance, knowledge seems straightforward – you observe, you reason, you believe. But the moment you ask whether that belief is justified, the ground shifts. Justification is the bridge between mere belief and genuine knowledge, and it turns out that bridge has some serious structural weaknesses. From the limits of what our senses can tell us, to the pull of unconscious bias, to the question of whether practical usefulness can substitute for hard evidence – the justification of knowledge is riddled with challenges that epistemologists have wrestled with for centuries. This post unpacks four of the most pressing issues at the heart of that debate.

What is epistemic justification?

Before diving into the problems, it helps to be clear on what justification means in epistemology. Epistemic justification refers to the process of providing good reasons for believing something. Since at least the time of Plato’s Meno, philosophers have grappled with the question of what must be added to a true belief for it to count as knowledge. The widely accepted answer, codified as Justified True Belief (JTB), holds that knowledge requires a belief to be both true and supported by adequate reasons or evidence. Justification, in other words, is what separates knowledge from lucky guesses.

But what counts as adequate justification? That question immediately opens up a series of difficult issues – around the reliability of evidence, the role of doubt, the legitimacy of practical reasons, and the distorting effects of psychological bias on our reasoning.

The limitations of empirical evidence

Empirical evidence – knowledge gained through observation and sensory experience – is the most intuitive basis for justifying beliefs. If you see something, touch it, measure it, you feel entitled to believe it. But empirical evidence is far from a failsafe foundation for knowledge.

The problem of induction

One of the oldest challenges to empirical justification is the problem of induction. When we observe a pattern repeatedly – say, the sun rising every morning – we infer that it will continue. But no finite number of observations can logically guarantee a universal conclusion. Every empirical generalization is, in principle, vulnerable to being overturned by the next observation. Experimental epistemologists and philosophers of science have long recognized that individual observations cannot straightforwardly support universal scientific laws, and this remains one of the core unresolved tensions in the epistemology of science.

Fallibilism and the limits of evidence

This vulnerability underpins a crucial position in epistemology: fallibilism – the view that justified beliefs can still turn out to be false. Fallibilists agree with skeptics that absolute certainty is unattainable, but they argue that this does not eliminate knowledge altogether. Instead, they emphasize that knowledge involves justified beliefs that remain open to revision. A belief may be well-supported by all available evidence and still be wrong. The evidence itself may be flawed, incomplete, or misinterpreted. Justification, in this sense, is a necessary condition for knowledge – but not a sufficient one.

Consider a concrete case: you believe a medication is effective because dozens of peer-reviewed studies support it. Then new evidence emerges contradicting those findings. Your original belief was justified – but it was false. This is not a failure of the justification process; it is an inherent feature of how empirical knowledge works. As the Internet Encyclopedia of Philosophy notes, justification does not require absolute certainty, but rather that the belief be formed through sound reasoning and reliable evidence.

The subjectivity of evidence evaluation

A further complication is that what counts as good evidence is not universal. One person might consider expert testimony sufficient to justify a belief; another might demand direct empirical observation. Reliabilists in epistemology argue that justification depends not on the subjective interpretation of evidence but on whether the process by which evidence is gathered is reliable – such as rigorous scientific observation or careful reasoning. Even so, the standards for reliability are themselves contested, and the subjectivity of evidence evaluation remains a real obstacle in determining when a belief is genuinely justified.

The tension between doubt and certainty

Doubt and certainty sit at opposite ends of the epistemic spectrum, yet both are indispensable. Too little doubt leads to dogmatism; too much leads to paralysis. Striking the right balance is one of the central problems in the justification of knowledge.

Descartes and the method of doubt

The most famous attempt to use doubt as a tool for reaching certainty is Renรฉ Descartes’s Meditations on First Philosophy. Descartes systematically doubted everything – the reliability of his senses, the existence of the physical world, even mathematical truths – to find something that could not be doubted. His conclusion, cogito ergo sum (“I think, therefore I am”), became the one unassailable certainty on which he hoped to rebuild all knowledge. Descartes’s method illustrates that doubt, properly applied, can be a productive epistemic tool rather than merely a destructive one.

However, as Britannica’s entry on epistemology notes, philosophers have disagreed sharply about the relationship between knowledge and certainty. Wittgenstein, for instance, argued that certainty is not a matter of individual apprehension but is grounded in communal practices – it is our acting that lies at the bottom of the language game, not a private act of seeing that something is true. For Wittgenstein, the justification of evidence comes to an end not at some infallible inner experience but at a form of social life.

Fallibilism vs. infallibilism

The debate between those who require absolute certainty for knowledge (infallibilists) and those who do not (fallibilists) has significant practical consequences. Infallibilist theories demand the highest degree of justification – one that guarantees the belief is true. But in practice, this standard is almost never met, leading to a broadly skeptical conclusion: we know very little. Fallibilism avoids this conclusion by lowering the bar. Knowledge is still genuine even if the justifying evidence could, in principle, be wrong. This position encourages intellectual humility – an openness to revising beliefs when new evidence demands it – without collapsing into the view that justified belief is impossible.

A further concept emerging from this tension is contextualism – the idea that the standards for justification are not fixed but vary with the context in which a belief is held. Contextualists argue that how much justification is required depends on the stakes involved: a belief about a trivial matter requires less rigorous justification than a belief on which lives depend.

The role of practical reasons in justifying beliefs

So far, the focus has been on evidence and reasoning as the foundations for justification. But there is a long tradition in philosophy that argues practical considerations – what it is useful or beneficial to believe – can also play a legitimate role in justifying beliefs. This is not a fringe position; it sits at the heart of pragmatist epistemology.

William James and the will to believe

William James, one of the founding figures of pragmatism, argued that beliefs must be evaluated not just by their correspondence to evidence but by their practical consequences. For James, a true idea is one we can validate and verify through experience – one that makes a concrete difference in our lives. Pragmatic reasons for believing something differ fundamentally from epistemic reasons: epistemic reasons are tied to truth, while pragmatic reasons are tied to our interests and goals.

In his famous essay “The Will to Believe,” James argued directly against the view that withholding belief until evidence is complete is always the rational or moral stance. There are cases, he insisted, where the opportunity to acquire knowledge is itself conditional on a prior commitment – you can only know certain truths by first choosing to act on them. This does not mean that evidence is irrelevant, but it does challenge the idea that evidence is always the only permissible basis for justified belief.

The limits of practical justification

The pragmatist position opens a difficult question: if practical utility can justify a belief, what prevents self-interest from distorting the justification process entirely? Philosophers have noted that pragmatic arguments can slide from legitimate considerations of consequence into wishful thinking. Believing something because it makes you feel better, or because it is socially convenient, is not the same as believing it because it is true. Most contemporary epistemologists therefore treat practical reasons as supplementary – they may play a role in certain constrained contexts, but they cannot substitute for epistemic justification tied to evidence and truth-conducive reasoning.

Psychological biases and the corruption of justification

Perhaps the most unsettling challenge to the justification of knowledge comes not from the external world but from within our own minds. Even when evidence is available and reasoning is sound, psychological biases can corrupt the process by which we form and justify beliefs.

What cognitive biases do to belief formation

Cognitive biases are systematic patterns of deviation from rationality in judgment. They are not random errors; they are recurring, predictable distortions in how we process information. One of the most epistemically damaging is confirmation bias – the tendency to seek out and prioritize evidence that supports what we already believe while dismissing or underweighting contradictory evidence. A person who holds a strong political conviction, for instance, is likely to interpret ambiguous data in ways that confirm that conviction. The result is a belief that feels justified – because it is supported by selected evidence – but is actually the product of motivated reasoning rather than impartial evaluation.

Biasing processes of this kind typically operate without the believer’s awareness. We cannot easily separate the beliefs shaped by unconscious bias from those reached through even-handed rational assessment, which is precisely what makes this challenge so serious for epistemology. As philosophers at Stanford have observed, there are over 150 named cognitive biases that distort human judgment – affecting race relations, hiring decisions, political reasoning, and even scientific research.

Implicit bias and circular belief formation

A particularly sharp problem arises with implicit bias – largely unconscious evaluations that shape perception and judgment based on stereotyped associations. According to philosopher Susanna Siegel, implicit bias can introduce a circular structure into belief formation. If a prior belief shapes what a person perceives, and that perception is then used as evidence to confirm the original belief, the result is a vicious epistemic circle. The justification appears evidence-based – but the evidence itself has been filtered through the very bias that needed justification. This circularity is not merely a theoretical problem; it has real consequences for how knowledge is formed and who gets to count as a credible source of it.

Can we correct for bias?

Awareness of cognitive bias does not automatically neutralize it. Research published in Frontiers in Psychology confirms that biases often operate below conscious awareness, making them difficult to counteract through reflection alone. Some epistemologists argue that this requires institutional and social solutions – peer review, adversarial collaboration, diverse epistemic communities – rather than purely individual efforts. Reliabilism offers one response: since justification depends on the reliability of the cognitive process, building more reliable processes (through rigorous methodology, transparency, and critical scrutiny) can partially compensate for individual biases. But the challenge remains significant, and it casts a long shadow over the project of individual epistemic justification.

The Gettier problem: when justification isn’t enough

No discussion of challenges in justification is complete without Edmund Gettier’s landmark 1963 paper, “Is Justified True Belief Knowledge?” Gettier showed through simple but devastating examples that a belief can be both justified and true – and yet fail to constitute knowledge. In the classic example, someone glances at a stopped clock at the precise moment it happens to show the correct time. Their belief about the time is justified (they have no reason to doubt the clock) and true (it really is that time) – but the correctness is entirely accidental. Luck, not proper justification, explains why the belief is true. The Gettier problem has since generated an enormous body of philosophical work, with theorists attempting to add a fourth condition to JTB or reformulate justification entirely. It remains an open and active problem in epistemology, illustrating that even a watertight account of justification may not be sufficient to secure knowledge.

Taken together, these challenges reveal that justification is not a simple threshold a belief crosses but a complex, multi-dimensional process that can go wrong in multiple ways. Empirical evidence has limits and can mislead. Doubt and certainty exist in productive tension, and calibrating them requires contextual judgment. Practical reasons can supplement epistemic justification but cannot replace it. And psychological biases operate as hidden distorting forces that undermine even sincere efforts to reason correctly. The ongoing work of epistemology is, in large part, the work of understanding these failure points and developing frameworks – fallibilism, reliabilism, virtue epistemology, contextualism – that help us navigate them more honestly and rigorously.
