Most of us like to think our beliefs are grounded in reason and evidence. But the reality of human cognition is far messier. We hold beliefs that persist long after the evidence against them has mounted, cling to ideas shaped more by what we remember vividly than by what is statistically true, and routinely filter new information through the lens of what we already think. In epistemology – the branch of philosophy concerned with knowledge and justification – a belief is considered unjustified when it is held without adequate evidential support, or when it continues to be held despite clear contradictory evidence. Understanding why unjustified beliefs form and persist is not just an abstract philosophical exercise; it has real consequences for how we make decisions, interpret the world, and relate to one another.

What makes a belief unjustified?

In philosophy, epistemologists have long wrestled with the conditions under which a belief counts as knowledge rather than mere opinion. The classical standard – that knowledge requires a belief to be true and justified – draws a sharp line between holding an idea and having adequate grounds for it. A belief is unjustified when that grounding is missing: either the evidence is too weak, the reasoning is flawed, or the evidence actively points the other way, yet the belief persists regardless.

This gap between evidence and belief is not a rare exception. It is a common feature of human cognition, produced by a set of well-documented psychological mechanisms. Three of the most significant are confirmation bias, the availability error, and the refusal to revise beliefs in the face of contradicting information – often called belief perseverance. Each of these operates differently, but together they create conditions in which unjustified beliefs not only form but become deeply entrenched.

Confirmation bias: the filter we don’t notice

Confirmation bias is the tendency to seek out, interpret, recall, and give greater weight to information that confirms what we already believe, while discounting or ignoring evidence that challenges it. It is one of the most thoroughly studied cognitive biases in psychology, and it operates largely without our awareness.

One of the earliest and most influential demonstrations appeared in an experiment by Peter Wason in 1960. Participants were asked to identify the rule behind a sequence of numbers. Rather than testing hypotheses that could falsify their initial guesses, subjects consistently chose tests that would confirm them – and grew more confident in their hypotheses even when those hypotheses were wrong.

Confirmation bias is described as a tendency to search for or interpret evidence in ways that are partial to existing beliefs and expectations. It does not necessarily involve active dishonesty. More often, it is a matter of selective attention: the mind is drawn toward information that fits, and is inclined to scrutinize contradictory information more harshly, or simply not notice it at all.

How confirmation bias fuels unjustified belief

The practical effect of confirmation bias is a self-reinforcing loop. Someone who believes, for instance, that a particular medical supplement is effective will pay attention to anecdotal reports of success and mentally filter out accounts of failure or harm. Over time, this selective intake creates the impression that the evidence is overwhelmingly supportive – not because it is, but because contradictory evidence was never allowed to register with equal weight.

This pattern is especially visible in politically or emotionally charged domains. Research on COVID-19 vaccination attitudes found that confirmation bias played an active role in how people processed information about vaccines: those who had been vaccinated tended to reject negative reports about vaccine effects, while those who had not been vaccinated rejected evidence of the benefits. Each group selectively processed the same body of available evidence in ways that confirmed their prior position.

Clinical settings offer another instructive case. When a doctor forms an early diagnosis, subsequent information gathered from the patient tends to be interpreted in ways that support that diagnosis, a process known as anchoring. The initial hypothesis shapes what evidence is sought and how it is read – not through bad faith, but through the natural pull of confirmation.

The availability error: mistaking vividness for truth

A second major source of unjustified belief is the availability heuristic – and more specifically, the errors it produces. First described by psychologists Amos Tversky and Daniel Kahneman in the early 1970s, the availability heuristic is a mental shortcut in which we judge how likely or frequent something is based on how easily examples of it come to mind.

This shortcut is often useful. If you can readily recall many instances of something, it probably is common. But ease of recall is shaped by factors that have nothing to do with actual frequency – particularly vividness, recency, and emotional impact. A single dramatic story lodges in memory far more firmly than a hundred unremarkable data points. As a result, people routinely overestimate the likelihood of rare but sensational events, while underestimating far more common dangers that receive less attention.

Risk perception and the availability error

The classic illustration involves air travel. Plane crashes receive intense media coverage, with vivid imagery and dramatic narratives. Car accidents happen constantly but are rarely treated as major news events. The result is a widespread and demonstrably false belief: research has calculated that driving the same distance as an average flight is approximately 65 times riskier than flying, yet many people are far more anxious about air travel. The belief that flying is especially dangerous is not supported by the evidence – it is supported by the ease with which a plane crash can be imagined.

The same mechanism distorts perceptions of crime, disease, and terrorism. When vivid examples dominate the available information in memory, they crowd out base-rate data and statistical reality. After natural disasters, insurance purchase rates in affected communities spike dramatically, then decline over subsequent years – not because the underlying risk changes, but because the memory of the event fades, making the danger feel less immediate and therefore less probable.

The availability error, then, does not arise from a failure to encounter evidence. It arises from a failure to weigh evidence correctly. The belief that results is unjustified not because it is unsupported by any experience, but because the experience driving it is unrepresentative – too vivid, too recent, too emotionally charged to be a reliable guide to actual probability.

Belief perseverance: when evidence is not enough

Perhaps the most philosophically striking form of unjustified belief is one that persists even after it has been explicitly contradicted. Belief perseverance refers to the tendency to maintain a belief even when the information that originally supported it has been shown to be false or when substantial counter-evidence has been presented.

One landmark study, now foundational in this area, was conducted by Leon Festinger and colleagues, who spent time with members of a doomsday cult that predicted the world would end on December 21, 1954. When the predicted end did not occur, most members did not abandon their belief. Some reported an even stronger faith than before. Festinger went on to propose the theory of cognitive dissonance: the psychological discomfort that arises when new information conflicts with an existing belief, and the various strategies people use to resolve that discomfort – usually by adjusting the interpretation of new evidence rather than revising the belief itself.

The role of identity and emotional investment

Belief perseverance is not simply intellectual stubbornness. It is deeply connected to identity. Research suggests that the process of abandoning a conviction can feel psychologically similar to the experience of grief, with philosopher Peter Marris noting that human beings have “a deep-rooted and insistent need for continuity.” When a belief is bound up with a person’s sense of who they are – their political identity, their religious commitments, their professional expertise – revising it feels like a form of self-betrayal.

This explains a counterintuitive finding: in some documented cases, presenting people with strong counter-evidence to a cherished belief can cause them to hold that belief more tightly rather than less. Philosophers and cognitive scientists have noted that beliefs which are unlikely to be revised include political, moral, and religious convictions, as well as beliefs about one’s own abilities and competencies – precisely the domains where identity and self-image are most at stake.

Research into belief perseverance identifies several supporting mechanisms: confirmation bias reinforces the belief by filtering incoming information; the availability heuristic makes the original supporting examples feel more salient than contradictory ones; and overconfidence makes people less likely to actively seek out disconfirming evidence in the first place. These mechanisms do not operate in isolation – they compound one another, creating a cognitive system that is far more resistant to revision than a straightforward model of rational belief-updating would predict.

Why unjustified beliefs persist despite evidence

A reasonable question arises: if unjustified beliefs are so clearly at odds with the evidence, why don’t people simply change their minds when confronted with facts? The answer lies in understanding that rational belief revision is not merely a matter of receiving new information. It requires that the evidence be recognized as relevant, assessed without distortion, and allowed to actually alter the existing belief structure – each of which is complicated by the mechanisms described above.

Confirmation bias means that contradictory evidence may not even be registered at full strength. The availability heuristic means that striking supporting examples continue to feel more representative than they are. And the psychological costs of belief revision – the discomfort of cognitive dissonance, the threat to identity – create a strong motivational force pushing back against change.

Cognitive biases are systematic patterns of reasoning errors, not random ones. They are predictable, which means that awareness of them creates a genuine opportunity for correction. Recognizing that a belief may have been formed through vivid but unrepresentative experience, or maintained by selective attention to supporting evidence, is the first step toward subjecting it to more rigorous scrutiny.

Addressing unjustified beliefs: toward more careful epistemic practice

Addressing unjustified belief is less about willpower and more about method. Several practices are supported by the research literature as effective in reducing the influence of these biases.

Actively seeking disconfirming evidence directly counteracts confirmation bias. Rather than asking “what supports my current belief?”, the more epistemically rigorous question is “what would convince me I am wrong, and does that evidence exist?” This is a discipline familiar from scientific reasoning, where the standard test of a hypothesis is an attempt to falsify it, not merely to confirm it.

Consulting base rates and statistical data counters the availability error. When a vivid example is shaping a judgment, pausing to ask what the actual frequency of the relevant event is – rather than relying on what is easiest to recall – substantially improves the accuracy of risk assessments.

Engaging seriously with opposing perspectives, particularly those held by informed people, reduces the insularity that makes belief perseverance so resilient. Structured expert elicitation research recommends deliberately including diverse viewpoints precisely to dilute the distorting effect of motivational biases on collective judgment.

None of these strategies is foolproof, and none eliminates the underlying cognitive tendencies. But epistemology has always argued that the quality of our beliefs depends on the quality of our processes for forming and revising them. Unjustified beliefs are not a sign of unintelligence; they are a sign of unexamined cognition. The remedy is not certainty but careful, ongoing scrutiny of the grounds on which we hold what we hold.
