What is the relationship between your thoughts and your brain? When you feel pain, is that sensation purely a chemical event in your neurons, or is there something more – something immaterial – going on? This question has occupied philosophers for centuries and sits at the heart of what’s known as the mind-body problem. Two foundational positions have dominated the debate: dualism, which holds that mind and body are fundamentally different kinds of things, and monism, which insists there is only one fundamental kind of substance underlying both. Understanding these two approaches – and the modern theories that grew from them – is essential to grasping how philosophy has tried to make sense of human consciousness.

The mind-body problem: why it matters
The mind-body problem centers on understanding how immaterial thoughts and feelings can interact with the material world, or whether they are ultimately physical phenomena. It is not merely an abstract puzzle. It has direct consequences for how we understand consciousness, personal identity, free will, and even how we approach medicine and neuroscience. Do our mental states cause physical events in the body, or are mental states themselves nothing more than physical processes in disguise? The answer shapes how we think about what it means to be human.
Descartes and the case for dualism
The modern form of this debate was largely set in motion by the 17th-century French philosopher Renรฉ Descartes. According to the Internet Encyclopedia of Philosophy, one of the deepest and most lasting legacies of Descartes’ philosophy is his thesis that mind and body are really distinct – a view now called mind-body dualism. He argued that the nature of the mind, as a thinking, non-extended thing, is completely different from the body, which is an extended, non-thinking thing, and that it is therefore possible for one to exist without the other.
In concrete terms, Descartes divided reality into two kinds of substance. The mind – which he called res cogitans (thinking thing) – is non-physical and non-spatial. The body – res extensa (extended thing) – occupies space and operates according to the laws of physics. As Britannica explains, Descartes developed a theory of mind as an immaterial, nonextended substance that engages in activities such as rational thought, imagining, feeling, and willing, while matter conforms to the laws of physics in mechanistic fashion.
The interaction problem
Dualism raises an immediate and serious difficulty: if mind and body are entirely different in nature, how do they interact? Britannica notes that willing the arm to be raised causes it to be raised, and being hit by a hammer causes the mind to feel pain – but how this causal interaction is even possible between two fundamentally different substances is one of the chief problems Descartes and his followers faced. Descartes himself proposed that the mind and body interacted via the pineal gland, a small structure in the centre of the brain, though this answer was widely regarded as unconvincing.
This difficulty – known as the interaction problem – became a major reason why later philosophers moved away from substance dualism. The Stanford Encyclopedia of Philosophy notes that the mechanistic conception of nature Descartes helped establish implies that the physical world is causally closed, meaning everything that happens follows from the laws of physics. If the non-physical mind is supposed to cause physical events, this causal closure is violated – a significant theoretical cost.
Property dualism: a softer version
Not all forms of dualism are as radical as Descartes’. Property dualism concedes that there is only one kind of substance – physical substance – but insists that it has two categorically distinct types of properties: physical properties and mental properties. Mental properties like beliefs, desires, and emotions are seen as real and distinct from purely physical descriptions, yet they inhere in the same physical substance. As one academic overview of modern philosophy of mind explains, property dualists argue that the mental and physical properties are categorically distinct and not reducible to each other, even if the world is constituted of just one kind of substance.
Spinoza and the case for monism
While Descartes split reality in two, his near-contemporary Baruch Spinoza (1632-1677) took a dramatically different path. As Wikipedia’s entry on dualism summarizes, Spinoza criticized substance dualism and proposed instead a rigorous monism that treats mind and body as two attributes of a single substance – which he referred to as God or Nature, defending a form of pantheism in which only one substance exists.
For Spinoza, thought and extension (physicality) are not two separate substances but two attributes of the same underlying reality. The Collector’s analysis of Spinoza’s philosophy explains his central metaphysical idea clearly: there exists only one substance, and we can think of this substance in two crucial ways – it is conscious, and it has extension (it is located in space). Where Descartes saw two separate substances, Spinoza unified them into one substance that has both thinking and extension as its properties.
How monism dissolves the interaction problem
Spinoza’s great insight was that his monism simply removes the interaction problem rather than trying to solve it. According to the same analysis, a monism such as the one defended by Spinoza completely bridges over the problem of causal interaction: if there are no separate substances, then there is no problem with how they are united or how they causally interact. Mind and body are not separate things that need a mechanism to communicate – they are two faces of the same reality.
This is often called substance monism or, given Spinoza’s identification of the one substance with God and Nature, a form of neutral monism – the view that the single underlying substance is neither purely mental nor purely physical but something to which both thought and extension belong. An academic overview of the topic notes that Spinoza proposed a substance that is neither material nor immaterial, but something to which both thought and extension belonged – a philosophically elegant move that bypassed the Cartesian deadlock.
Physicalism and the identity theory
By the 20th century, the most dominant form of monism was not Spinoza’s neutral monism but physicalism (also called materialism). As CliffsNotes’ philosophical overview explains, physicalism is grounded in the idea that the mind is not a separate substance but rather a function or process that arises from the brain’s physical structure and activity. This aligns with scientific advances in neuroscience demonstrating correlations between brain activity and mental states.
One of the most direct versions of physicalism is the identity theory, which claims that mental states are simply identical to brain states. Identity theory holds that mental states are identical to brain states – a thought, a feeling, or a sensation is nothing other than a particular physical state occurring in the brain. Pioneered by philosophers like U.T. Place and J.J.C. Smart in the late 1950s, this view offers a clean, scientifically-minded resolution: there are no mysterious immaterial minds, only neurons firing in particular patterns.
The identity theory does, however, face a notable objection. If pain in a human being is identical to a specific type of brain state, then an octopus or an alien life form – whose neural architecture is entirely different – could not, in principle, feel pain in the same sense. This seems too restrictive a conclusion, and it led philosophers to search for a more flexible account.
Functionalism: what the mind does, not what it’s made of
Functionalism emerged as a response to precisely this limitation. According to the Stanford Encyclopedia of Philosophy, functionalism holds that mental states can be multiply realized – meaning that many physically different systems could have internal states that play the same functional roles. The same mental state, like pain, could be instantiated in a human brain, an octopus, or even a sufficiently complex artificial system, provided the relevant functional role is fulfilled.
The Internet Encyclopedia of Philosophy captures the core idea well: functionalism is the theory that mental states are more a matter of what they do than what they are made of. A mental state is defined by its causal relationship to sensory inputs, behavioral outputs, and other mental states – not by the specific physical material that implements it. Philosopher Hilary Putnam, who is widely credited as functionalism’s chief proponent, modelled this idea on computing: just as the same software program can run on different hardware, the same mental state can be realized in different physical systems.
Functionalism and the limits of physicalism
A 2020 PhilPapers survey found that functionalism has become the most popular theory in philosophy of mind, with 33% of respondents accepting or leaning towards it, compared to 22% for dualism and 13% for identity theory. Yet functionalism is not without its critics. The philosopher David Chalmers famously argued that even a complete functional account of the mind leaves something unexplained: the subjective, first-person quality of experience – what it actually feels like to see red or feel pain. He called this the hard problem of consciousness, and it remains one of the most debated issues in contemporary philosophy of mind, pushing some thinkers back toward forms of dualism or toward new frameworks like panpsychism, which holds that consciousness is a fundamental feature of the universe present even at the most basic physical level.
Comparing the two approaches
Dualism and monism represent genuinely different visions of what kind of universe we inhabit. Dualism – particularly in its Cartesian form – captures something that feels intuitively right: our inner mental life seems qualitatively different from the physical processes we can observe and measure. But it struggles to explain how mind and body interact if they are truly distinct substances. Monism – whether in Spinoza’s neutral form or in modern physicalism – offers theoretical unity and scientific tractability, but risks explaining away the richness of conscious experience rather than genuinely accounting for it. Functionalism attempts a middle path, defining the mental by its causal role rather than its physical composition, and has proven highly influential – but the hard problem of consciousness remains a formidable challenge even on functionalist terms.
What makes this debate enduringly significant is that it is not merely academic. Questions about the nature of the mind are now central to neuroscience, artificial intelligence, psychology, and even ethics. Whether a sufficiently sophisticated AI can have genuine experiences, whether consciousness could survive the death of the body, and what personal identity really consists of – all these questions trace back to the foundational dispute between dualism and monism that Descartes and Spinoza brought into sharp focus over 350 years ago.
