The ancient view: mind and body as one
In ancient Greek philosophy, the question of the soul and body was inseparable from the question of what makes something alive. Two thinkers defined this conversation for centuries: Plato and Aristotle. Their positions were fundamentally different, but both shaped the road that eventually led to Descartes.
Plato: the soul imprisoned in the body
Plato’s view leaned decisively toward separation. His philosophy is grounded in the theory of forms, which holds that true reality consists not of the physical world we perceive, but of a higher, eternal realm of perfect and unchanging ideas. The soul, for Plato, belongs to this higher realm. It is immortal, rational, and fundamentally distinct from the mortal body it temporarily inhabits. In his dialogue Phaedo, Plato advances arguments for the soul’s survival after death, reflecting a deep conviction that the soul is not dependent on the body for its existence. As the MIT Press Reader notes, even Plato’s interest lay in the fact of the soul’s immortality, not in the precise mechanics of how an immaterial soul can be “in” a physical body – a puzzle he largely left unaddressed. This Platonic view of an immortal soul distinct from the mortal body would prove enormously influential, shaping not only later philosophy but also Christian theology’s understanding of human nature and the afterlife.
Aristotle: soul and body as inseparable partners
Aristotle, Plato’s most famous student, rejected his teacher’s separation of soul and body. He proposed instead his theory of hylomorphism – from the Greek hylฤ (matter) and morphฤ (form) – which holds that every living thing is a composite of matter and form that cannot be meaningfully separated. According to Britannica, hylomorphism was the central doctrine of Aristotle’s philosophy of nature, positing that every natural body consists of two intrinsic principles: matter (the physical substance) and form (the organizing principle that makes it what it is). In his treatise De Anima, Aristotle applied this directly to the soul: the soul is the form of the body. It is not a separate substance floating inside the body, but the very principle that makes a biological organism alive and functional. He argued, as the Stanford Encyclopedia of Philosophy explains, that “the soul is not separable from the body” – just as the shape of a wax seal cannot exist apart from the wax itself, the soul cannot exist independently of the body it animates. This was a fundamentally integrated view: mind, soul, and body were aspects of a single living entity.
Aristotle’s position, however, contained one important complication. He recognized a faculty he called nous (intellect or mind), which he described as exceptional – possibly separable from the body in a way that other soul-functions were not. This ambiguity would preoccupy commentators for centuries and left the door open for later dualistic readings of his work.
The medieval synthesis: Aquinas and the Aristotelian revival
For several centuries after Aristotle, his philosophy was largely transmitted through commentaries and partially absorbed into early Christian thought. The decisive medieval moment came with Thomas Aquinas (1225-1274), who undertook a thorough synthesis of Aristotelian philosophy with Christian theology. As the hylomorphic doctrine was received and developed by scholastic thinkers, Aquinas argued that human beings are composites of soul and body, with the soul serving as the form of the body – very much in the Aristotelian sense. For Aquinas, the soul was not a ghost inhabiting a machine; it was the animating principle of the whole person. He even insisted that disembodied souls were in an “unnatural state,” and that the fullness of human existence required both soul and body together.
This scholastic-Aristotelian framework dominated European intellectual life through the late medieval period and well into the 16th century. Universities taught Aristotle as the authoritative framework for understanding both the natural world and human nature. The mind-body relationship was settled, at least officially: soul and body formed a unified whole, with the soul as the body’s form and organizing principle.
The Renaissance and the cracking of the synthesis
The Renaissance (roughly the 14th to 17th centuries) introduced a set of forces that gradually eroded this Aristotelian consensus. It was a period of rediscovery – of ancient texts, of the natural world, of human potential – and it brought with it a growing skepticism toward established authority, including Aristotle’s.
One of the most disruptive developments was the rise of the new astronomy and natural science. According to the Stanford Encyclopedia of Philosophy, the experimental and mathematical approach of Galileo Galilei (1564-1642) implicitly challenged Aristotelian physics and cosmology. Copernicus’s heliocentric model, Kepler’s laws of planetary motion, and Galileo’s mechanics demolished the Aristotelian picture of a purposeful, hierarchically ordered cosmos in which everything moves toward its natural end. As Wikipedia’s account of the Scientific Revolution records, by the 16th century, the Aristotelian framework still dominated Europe’s intellectual landscape – but it was already fading and “partly discredited” in the eyes of historians like James Hannam.
Crucially, this shift carried direct consequences for how thinkers understood the human body. The Aristotelian view held that nature was teleological – everything, including the human body, operated according to purpose and final causes. As Wikipedia notes on Descartes, Aristotelian philosophy of the day held that everything in nature – from the motion of stars to the growth of a tree – was explainable through such purpose-driven final causes. The new science rejected this. It treated nature as a machine governed by mathematical laws, not by divine purposes. Once the body was reconceived as a mechanical system operating according to physical laws, it became harder to see how the soul or mind – understood in any Aristotelian sense – fit into the picture. The integrated view was starting to come apart.
Renaissance humanists also emphasized individual reason, observation, and skepticism toward tradition. This intellectual climate produced thinkers like Bernardino Telesio and Giordano Bruno, who promoted empiricist naturalism that challenged Aristotelian orthodoxy. The Italian novatores (innovators), as the Stanford Encyclopedia records, are known to have influenced French thinkers – including, eventually, Descartes himself.
Descartes: the radical break
Renรฉ Descartes (1596-1650) was educated in the scholastic-Aristotelian tradition at the Jesuit college of La Flรจche, where he received a thorough grounding in Greek philosophy. But he was also deeply immersed in the new mathematics and science. As TheCollector observes, his scientific and mathematical work convinced him that new knowledge was on the verge of transforming human life – and his philosophical work reflects a deliberate attempt to break from the inherited tradition, even while working with its vocabulary.
The result was a philosophy that drew a sharper line between mind and body than any major Western thinker had drawn before.
The cogito and the nature of the mind
Descartes’s starting point was radical doubt. He resolved to strip away everything he could possibly doubt and see what remained. He found that he could doubt the existence of his body (perhaps he was being deceived by an evil demon), but he could not doubt that he was thinking. This produced his most famous philosophical statement: cogito, ergo sum – “I think, therefore I am.” From this, Descartes concluded that the mind, as a thinking thing, is fundamentally different in nature from the body, which is an extended, physical thing. As a review in Dialogues in Clinical Neuroscience puts it, Descartes raised the question of consciousness and argued that you cannot deny the existence of your mind while using your mind to deny it – implying that mind and body must be categorically distinct entities.
Two substances: res cogitans and res extensa
According to the Internet Encyclopedia of Philosophy, Descartes argued that the nature of the mind (a thinking, non-extended thing) is completely different from the nature of the body (an extended, non-thinking thing), and therefore each could in principle exist without the other. He called these two fundamentally different kinds of substances res cogitans (thinking substance, the mind) and res extensa (extended substance, matter and body). The body, like all of nature, operates mechanically – it follows the laws of physics. The mind, by contrast, is immaterial, indivisible, and has no location in space.
This was a direct challenge to the Aristotelian synthesis. As the Stanford Encyclopedia of Philosophy explains, Descartes combined his dualism with a new mechanistic conception of the natural world, of which he was a pioneer – and in contrast to his Aristotelian predecessors, he shifted the focus of mental life from the intellect to consciousness. The body is a machine. The mind is something else entirely.
The problem of interaction
The sharp separation immediately created a puzzle that Descartes himself struggled to answer. If mind and body are completely different substances with no shared properties, how do they causally affect each other? When you decide to raise your hand, your mind somehow produces a movement in your body. When a pin pricks your finger, your body somehow produces the sensation of pain in your mind. According to Britannica, this part of Descartes’s theory – known as interactionism – raised one of the chief problems faced by Descartes and his followers. Descartes’s own proposed solution was that mind and body interact through the pineal gland, a small structure at the center of the brain. This answer satisfied almost no one, and the interaction problem became the defining challenge for all subsequent dualist theories.
Princess Elizabeth of Bohemia, in her philosophical correspondence with Descartes, was among the first to press this objection sharply. She questioned how an immaterial substance with no spatial properties could possibly cause motion in a material body – a challenge that forced Descartes to elaborate his views without fully resolving the tension.
Why this shift mattered
Descartes’s dualism was not simply an abstract philosophical position. It had significant motivations. The Internet Encyclopedia of Philosophy identifies two key drivers: a religious motivation and a scientific one. Religiously, establishing that mind and body are truly distinct substances provided a rational basis for believing in the soul’s potential immortality – if the soul is not identical to the body, the body’s decay does not necessarily destroy the soul. Scientifically, a complete separation of mind from matter cleared the way for a purely mechanistic physics, free from the Aristotelian entanglement of final causes and teleology. If the body is simply a machine, it can be studied with the same mathematical tools used to study any other physical system.
This scientific motivation had lasting consequences. Descartes’s framework helped establish the foundations of modern science by sharply distinguishing the domain of physical inquiry (the body and all of nature) from the domain of the mental. But it also bequeathed to philosophy and science the mind-body problem in its modern form: how can a non-physical mind interact with a physical body? That question – first made urgent by Descartes’s own neatly formulated dualism – continues to animate debates in philosophy, neuroscience, and cognitive science today.
Descartes’s immediate successors – Malebranche, Leibniz, Spinoza – each responded differently to the problem he had created. Some denied that mind and body interact at all; others denied that they are ultimately distinct substances. But all of them were responding to a framework that Descartes had put in place. As an introduction to philosophy of mind from Rebus Community Press observes, even in the contemporary era, philosophers like Gilbert Ryle found it worth arguing against Descartes’s views precisely to set up their own theories – a testament to how deeply Cartesian dualism shaped the terms of the debate.
From unity to division: the long arc
What the historical journey from ancient Greece to Descartes reveals is not a sudden rupture, but a gradual reorientation. Aristotle’s hylomorphism offered a genuinely integrated vision of the human being – soul and body bound together in a single living substance. The medieval synthesis through Aquinas preserved and deepened that integration, embedding it in a Christian theological framework. But the scientific revolution of the 16th and 17th centuries introduced a new picture of nature as a mathematical machine, a picture that had no obvious place for the soul as Aristotle conceived it. Descartes, standing at this intersection of old and new, reformulated the question in terms that made the separation of mind and body seem not just possible, but necessary. The price of that reformulation was the mind-body problem – a puzzle that has haunted philosophy ever since.
