When you hear the word disease, your mind doesn’t jump to one specific illness. Instead, it gestures toward an entire category – malaria, typhoid, skin conditions, heart ailments – all bundled under a single term. That’s not a coincidence or a quirk of everyday language. In logic, this is precisely what a term is designed to do: function as the name of a class. Terms are the building blocks of logical language, and understanding how they work – specifically the dual role they play through connotation and denotation – is foundational to clear, rigorous reasoning.

What does it mean for a term to name a class?
In ordinary conversation, we use words loosely. But in logic, words are sharpened into terms – precise linguistic units that refer not to random things but to classes of things. A class, simply put, is a group of objects, individuals, or concepts that share certain defining characteristics. When you use a term, you are naming that entire group at once.
Consider the word jet. It doesn’t point to one specific aircraft sitting on a runway. It names an entire class of objects – all those vehicles that share the defining features of being aircraft capable of high-speed, powered flight. As the IGNOU eGyanKosh unit on logic puts it, jet is a class of objects, and the quality or qualities that make an object a jet constitute its connotation. Every term works this way: it draws a conceptual boundary and groups everything within that boundary under one label.
This is why John Stuart Mill, in his foundational A System of Logic, preferred to define a class through its general name rather than the other way around. His insight was that it is more logical to say “a class is the indefinite multitude of individuals denoted by a general name” – because the name and its meaning come first; the class follows from it.
The two dimensions of every term: denotation and connotation
Every logical term carries two distinct but inseparable dimensions of meaning. These are its denotation and its connotation. Grasping both is essential to understanding why terms are such powerful tools in logic.
Denotation: the members of the class
Denotation refers to the actual objects, individuals, or instances that a term covers – in other words, the members of the class it names. In logic, the denotation of a term is the list, or extension, of objects referred to by that word – you can think of it as how far the term “extends” into the world. The word planet, for instance, denotes specific objects: Venus, Earth, Jupiter, Neptune, and so on.
Denotation is also known as extension because it shows the range or extent of objects to which a term applies. When you ask “what does this term refer to?” you are asking about its denotation. So for the term disease, the denotation includes malaria, typhoid, cholera, the common cold, skin disease, heart disease – every illness that falls under that umbrella. The denotation can span an enormous number of members, and crucially, as the Stanford Encyclopedia of Philosophy notes on Mill, it can even stretch across time – a term like man denotes not just living humans but all past, present, and future individuals to whom that term applies.
Connotation: the defining qualities of the class
Connotation (also called intension or comprehension) refers to the set of attributes, qualities, or characteristics that define membership in a class. It answers the question: “What must something be like in order to belong to this class?” According to Mill’s foundational analysis, a general name connotes attributes and denotes each object that has those attributes – meaning the connotation is what determines who gets included in the denotation.
For the term jet, the connotation would include qualities such as being an aircraft, being powered by jet propulsion, and being capable of high-speed flight. For the term disease, the connotation includes qualities like being harmful to the organism, involving abnormal bodily conditions, and typically requiring medical attention. These shared, essential qualities are what give the term its logical weight.
It is important to note that logicians are careful here. In the logical view, connotation means only those common, essential qualities of an object on account of which the term is applied to it – non-essential or accidental qualities, even if widely shared, do not count. For example, many crows happen to be black, but “blackness” is not part of the logical connotation of “crow” because it is not a necessary defining quality. What constitutes the connotation of a term is its essential, defining attributes – not merely its coincidental ones.
How connotation determines denotation
One of the most important relationships in logical terminology is this: connotation determines denotation. To know the connotation of a term is to know exactly which objects qualify as members of the class it names. The qualities come first; the members are identified by checking against those qualities.
As Mill argues, knowing the connotation of a word gives you the necessary and sufficient conditions to decide whether any given object is denoted by that word. This is what makes the logical use of terms so precise. If “mammal” connotes being warm-blooded, air-breathing, and nursing young with milk, then anything meeting all those conditions is denoted by the term, and anything falling short is not – regardless of how similar it might look.
This is also what separates logical usage from everyday usage. In ordinary speech, connotation often picks up emotional or cultural associations. The distinction between connotation and denotation as a formal matter of meaning was introduced by John Stuart Mill in A System of Logic (1843), and a parallel distinction between sense and reference was later developed by Gottlob Frege in 1892. In logic, however, connotation is stripped of subjective associations and refers strictly to the defining attributes of the class.
Classes within classes: how terms organize the world
One of the most practically useful aspects of understanding terms as class names is recognizing that classes are rarely flat. They have internal structure – sub-classes nested within broader classes, and individual members nested within sub-classes.
Take the term disease again. While it names an entire class, it also has sub-classes: tropical disease, heart disease, skin disease. Each of these sub-classes may have further members or their own sub-classes. The sub-class tropical disease contains members like malaria, typhoid, and cholera. Typhoid itself becomes a sub-class when we recognize sub-types like para-typhoid within it. This hierarchical nesting of class, sub-class, and individual member is central to how logical terms organize reality.
This structure matters because it reflects how connotation and denotation interact across levels. As you move from a broader class to a narrower one – say, from animal to mammal to feline to tiger – the connotation increases (more defining qualities are added) while the denotation decreases (fewer individuals qualify). This inverse relationship is a fundamental feature of logical classification, and it is built directly into the way terms function as class names.
Terms versus proper names: a crucial distinction
Not every word functions as a class name in the logical sense. Proper names – like Aristotle, Paris, or the Nile – typically refer to a single, specific individual rather than to a class of things. Mill recognized that proper names denote an object without connoting any attribute – they are labels attached to one entity without implying any defining qualities. Knowing a person’s name tells you nothing about their characteristics; it only identifies them.
General terms, by contrast, are inherently connotative. As Mill established, all concrete general names are connotative – they signal the attributes which justify applying the name to any given individual. This is what allows them to function as genuine class names: they carry criteria, not just labels.
There is also the curious case of terms that connote attributes but denote nothing at all – what logicians call the empty or null class. Terms like unicorn or the current king of France have a coherent connotation (we know what qualities a unicorn would need to have) but no denotation, because no real-world objects meet those criteria. Their connotation is intact; their extension is simply empty.
Why this matters for logical reasoning
Understanding terms as class names – and grasping the interplay between their connotation and denotation – is not an academic exercise. It is the basis of sound argument. When terms are used loosely or their connotation is left vague, reasoning breaks down. Mill warned that so long as a term’s connotation is not clearly fixed, it is constantly liable to be applied by extension from one thing to another, until it reaches things that have little or no resemblance to what was first designated by it.
This is why debates over contested terms – like justice, democracy, or marriage – are so often irresolvable. People may agree on the word but disagree on its connotation, and since connotation determines denotation, they are effectively talking about different classes of things without realizing it. Before any logical argument can proceed cleanly, the terms involved must carry a well-defined, agreed-upon connotation.
Mill himself insisted that instead of speaking of “the concept of a class,” we should always speak of “the signification of a class name.” The shift is significant: it moves meaning out of the mind and into language, making it public, examinable, and correctable – which is exactly what logic requires.
Putting it together: the term as a logical instrument
A term, in the logical sense, is far more than a word. It is a structured instrument that simultaneously names a class (through its denotation), defines the criteria for membership in that class (through its connotation), and organizes reality into a nested hierarchy of categories. Whether the term is as concrete as jet or as abstract as justice, it performs this double function every time it is used in a proposition.
The connotation gives the term its meaning – the essential qualities that define the class. The denotation gives the term its reference – the actual members that qualify under those qualities. Together, they make the term a precise, functional unit of logical thought. Strip away one and you are left with either a meaningless label or an undefinable list. Keep both in view and you have a term ready for rigorous reasoning.
