Before you can reason about “justice,” “knowledge,” or even something as concrete as a “triangle,” you must be clear about what you mean. But crafting a precise, airtight definition is harder than it looks. Classical logicians identified specific rules that a good definition must follow, and corresponding fallacies of definition – errors that occur when those rules are broken. Understanding both sides of this coin is essential to anyone serious about thinking clearly.

Why definitions matter in logic

In everyday conversation, vague definitions are mostly an inconvenience. In logical reasoning, they can silently destroy an entire argument. Legal disputes frequently hinge on the definition of terms like “reasonable,” “intent,” or “property.” Political debates become circular when participants use terms like “freedom” or “fairness” without a shared definition. Scientific progress depends on precise, non-circular operational definitions that can be tested and refined.
