Every time you see the moon and instinctively think of the night sky, or notice dark clouds and expect rain, your mind is doing something David Hume spent a lifetime trying to explain. How do thoughts connect? Why does one idea lead to another so naturally, almost without effort? Hume’s answer, laid out in his landmark A Treatise of Human Nature (1739-40) and later in An Enquiry Concerning Human Understanding (1748), was that the mind is not born with ready-made concepts. Instead, it builds all its knowledge from raw sensory experience, piece by piece, through a process he called the association of ideas. This is one of the most important and far-reaching ideas in the history of empiricist philosophy.

Starting from scratch: impressions and ideas

To understand how association works, you first need to grasp Hume’s foundational distinction between impressions and ideas. According to Hume, every perception in the human mind belongs to one of these two types. Impressions are the direct, forceful deliveries of experience – the heat you feel from a flame, the sharpness of a sound, the colour you see in a sunset. Ideas, on the other hand, are the fainter mental copies of those experiences that linger in the mind when the original sensation is gone.

As Hume explained in the Treatise, impressions are felt and ideas are thought – and the difference between them is one of degree, not kind. Ideas are simply weaker, less vivid versions of the impressions that gave rise to them. The idea of sweetness you recall after eating fruit is a copy, albeit a pale one, of the original impression of tasting it.

Hume then draws a second crucial distinction: between simple and complex perceptions. A simple impression, like the specific shade of blue in the sky, cannot be broken down further. A complex impression, like the full experience of a garden, is made up of many simpler components – colour, texture, scent, sound. The Stanford Encyclopedia of Philosophy notes that while complex ideas may not always directly match experience (we can form an idea of a golden mountain without ever seeing one), every simple idea can be traced back to a corresponding simple impression. This is Hume’s famous Copy Principle: all simple ideas are copies of simple impressions, and nothing enters the mind without first passing through experience.

This principle is Hume’s direct refutation of rationalist claims about innate ideas – the notion, championed by philosophers like Descartes, that the mind arrives in the world pre-loaded with certain concepts. For Hume, the mind starts from scratch, deriving all its concepts from sensory experience. But if ideas begin as isolated, separate units of experience, how do they come together into the rich, connected world of thought we actually inhabit? This is where the laws of association become essential.

The problem of mental order

Hume notices something important: while the imagination has the freedom to separate and rearrange ideas in any order it likes, thoughts do not actually occur at random. There are recognizable patterns. Certain ideas reliably lead to certain other ideas. The mind, left to itself, does not jump chaotically from one unrelated thought to another – it follows a kind of gravitational pull between ideas.

In Section IV of the Treatise, Hume poses the question directly: if simple ideas can be separated and recombined in any way the imagination chooses, what prevents our thoughts from being an incoherent jumble? His answer is that the imagination is guided by some universal principles, a set of psychological laws that regularly pull certain ideas toward one another. He identifies three such principles: resemblance, contiguity, and cause and effect. Together, these are the laws of association of ideas, and Hume treats them as the basic architecture of human cognition.

The three laws of association

Resemblance

The first law is the most intuitive. According to the Internet Encyclopedia of Philosophy, ideas tend to become associated when the things they represent resemble each other. Hume’s own example is instructive: a painted portrait naturally leads the mind to think of the actual person depicted. The two ideas – the painting and the person – are connected not by any logical necessity, but by their similarity. One resembles the other, and so the mind moves naturally from one to the next.

This principle has wide reach. It explains why seeing one face reminds you of another, why reading about one historical leader brings a comparable figure to mind, or why a piece of music that sounds like something you once heard immediately pulls you toward memories of that earlier experience. The mind, Hume suggests, is constantly scanning for similarity, and when it finds it, it draws ideas together without any conscious effort required.

Contiguity

The second law governs ideas that were originally experienced close together in time or in space. In Hume’s example, the idea of one apartment in a building readily calls to mind the other apartments in the same building – not because they resemble each other, but because they are spatially adjacent. Similarly, two events that occur in quick succession tend to become mentally linked: hearing a door slam and then hearing footsteps creates an association between the two, even if one did not cause the other.

Contiguity is particularly important in memory. The mind stores experiences not just as individual units, but as clusters – things that happened together stay together in thought. Visiting a place from your past will often bring a cascade of associated memories, simply because those memories were originally formed in the same spatial and temporal neighbourhood. The principle of contiguity explains why this happens with such regularity and reliability.

Cause and effect

The third law is the most philosophically significant, and Hume treats it as the most powerful of the three. As Hume’s analysis of causation makes clear, when we repeatedly experience two events in sequence – one always following the other – the mind begins to associate them as cause and effect. Seeing dark clouds makes us expect rain. Observing lightning makes us anticipate thunder. The idea of a wound brings with it the idea of pain.

What makes this principle so remarkable is Hume’s insistence that the connection itself is not something we observe directly. We never see causation in the world – we only see one event followed by another, again and again. The mind, through habit and repetition, builds a strong associative bond between the two, and we project this as a necessary connection in nature. Hume treats causation as an independent principle of association, not reducible to either resemblance or contiguity alone – though it involves both. It is through this associative habit that we form our most important judgments about how the world works.

From simple to complex: how association builds knowledge

The laws of association are not merely descriptive curiosities. For Hume, they do the fundamental work of cognitive construction. As the associationist tradition in philosophy of mind recognises, Hume takes the same three relations – resemblance, contiguity, and causation – to explain both the sequence of thoughts in the conscious mind and the process by which simple ideas are combined into complex ones.

Consider the idea of “home.” It is not a simple idea you received in a single impression. It is an enormously complex idea, built from hundreds of simpler impressions accumulated over time – the look of a particular building, the smell of a particular room, the sound of familiar voices, the comfort of a specific chair. These simple ideas have been linked together by resemblance (they all feel familiar), contiguity (they were all experienced together), and causal associations (certain actions in that space reliably produced certain outcomes). Over time, the mind weaves them into a single, rich, complex idea that carries enormous emotional and cognitive weight.

This is Hume’s great contribution to understanding how the mind works: knowledge is not given in one piece. It is assembled. The laws of association are the machinery of that assembly. In the Abstract to the Treatise, Hume describes these principles as “the cement of the universe” – the ties that bind our thoughts together and make coherent experience possible.

Hume’s empiricism and the rejection of innate ideas

The laws of association carry a deeper philosophical implication: they make the rationalist concept of innate ideas entirely unnecessary. Hume accepts concept empiricism and rejects the purely intellectual and innate ideas found in rationalist philosophy. If the mind can construct all its complex knowledge from simple sensory impressions through the natural processes of resemblance, contiguity, and causal association, there is no need to posit any pre-installed ideas or rational intuitions. Experience alone is sufficient.

This is a radical claim. It means that even our most abstract and seemingly universal concepts – identity, substance, causation, the self – are products of associative psychology, not deliveries of pure reason. When we feel certain that A causes B, that certainty is not a rational insight; it is a psychological habit, built up through repeated experience and association. Hume is not saying the world has no order. He is saying that the order we perceive is a construction of the associating mind, not a truth we possess prior to experience.

Importantly, Hume does not try to explain why the mind associates ideas according to these principles. He is not offering a metaphysical theory of what makes resemblance or contiguity a real feature of the world. His project is purely descriptive and empirical: as a matter of psychological fact, these are the principles by which the human mind operates. His goal is to map the science of human nature with the same rigour that Newton brought to the physical sciences.

Influence and significance

The impact of Hume’s laws of association extended well beyond philosophy. Association dominated theorising about the mind in the English-speaking world from the early eighteenth century through the mid-twentieth century, influencing fields as diverse as psychology, ethics, literature, and early cognitive science. Psychologists including David Hartley, James Mill, and John Stuart Mill developed associationist theories of mind directly building on Hume’s framework. The later rise of behaviourism – with its emphasis on stimulus-response pairings – can be traced, in part, to this same associationist tradition.

Even in contemporary cognitive science, the idea that mental representations are connected through associative links – and that learning involves strengthening those links through experience – remains central. Today, philosophers recognise Hume as a precursor of contemporary cognitive science, and his three laws of association remain a foundational reference point for anyone trying to understand how the mind moves from raw experience to structured knowledge.

What made Hume’s account so compelling is its parsimony. You do not need to posit a rational soul, innate ideas, or divine illumination to explain how complex human knowledge is possible. Three simple psychological laws – resemblance, contiguity, and cause and effect – working on the materials of sensory experience, are enough to build the entire architecture of human thought.
