Indian cosmology is one of the most layered and fascinating frameworks for understanding the universe ever developed. Unlike the dominant Western model, which tends to see time as a straight line running from a definite beginning toward an eventual end, Indian traditions – across Hinduism, Buddhism, and Jainism – present a cosmos that breathes, expands, collapses, and renews itself in perpetual cycles. These are not just mythological narratives. They represent a deeply philosophical engagement with questions about the origin, structure, and fate of existence – questions that remain central to modern cosmology today.

The cyclical universe: a shared Indian worldview

The most striking feature of Indian cosmology is its commitment to cyclical time. Where Abrahamic traditions speak of a single act of divine creation and a final judgment, and modern science often focuses on the Big Bang as a singular origin point, Indian thought insists that the universe has neither a first beginning nor a final end. Creation, preservation, and destruction repeat endlessly – a cosmic rhythm as natural as the cycle of seasons or the alternation of day and night.

This cyclical view is shared, with important variations, by all three major Indian philosophical traditions. Hindu cosmology frames these cycles through divine action and cosmic time units. Buddhist cosmology places emphasis on impermanence and karma as the forces driving cosmic change. And Jain cosmology, perhaps the most distinctive of the three, removes the divine element entirely and presents an eternal, self-regulating universe. Each tradition, however, agrees that the cosmos undergoes recurring phases of emergence, existence, decline, and dissolution.

Hindu cosmology: divine cycles and vast timescales

Hindu cosmology is arguably the most elaborate of the three systems. It is deeply embedded in texts like the Vedas, the Puranas, and the Mahabharata, and its ideas about cosmic cycles are intricate, mathematically precise, and staggering in scale.

The Nasadiya Sukta and creation’s mystery

The philosophical roots of Hindu cosmology reach back to the Nasadiya Sukta (Hymn of Creation) in the Rigveda, one of the oldest philosophical texts in human history. Rather than declaring a definitive account of how the universe began, this hymn raises profound questions about whether anything – even the gods – could know what preceded creation. This spirit of open philosophical inquiry sets Hindu cosmology apart: it does not demand a single canonical origin story but embraces a diversity of theories.

Another important Vedic concept is the Hiranyagarbha, or “golden womb,” described in Rigveda 10.121 as the source from which the universe emerged – a concept echoing the “cosmic egg” motif found in creation narratives across many civilizations.

The Trimurti and cosmic governance

In later Puranic literature, the cosmic cycle becomes personified through the Trimurti – the three great deities who govern existence. Brahma is the creator who brings forth the universe; Vishnu is the preserver who sustains it; and Shiva is the destroyer whose cosmic dance dissolves the universe back into its primordial state. These are not separate, competing gods but three aspects of a single cosmic process. The destruction carried out by Shiva is not malevolent – it is the necessary precondition for renewal and fresh creation.

According to texts like the Vishnu Purana and Brahmanda Purana, the universe was born from a cosmic egg (Brahmanda). From a state of primordial void, Vishnu reclined upon cosmic waters, and from his navel a lotus emerged on which Brahma sat and began the act of creation. This narrative blends symbolic imagery with cosmological reasoning in a way that is characteristic of Indian philosophical storytelling.

Kalpas, yugas, and the mathematics of cosmic time

Hindu cosmology operates on timescales that dwarf anything in Western religious thought. The basic unit of cosmic time is the kalpa – one “day of Brahma” – which spans approximately 4.32 billion years. Each kalpa is followed by a night of equal duration (pralaya), during which the universe rests in an unmanifested state. Brahma’s total lifespan (maha-kalpa) extends to 311.04 trillion years, after which a complete dissolution (maha-pralaya) occurs before the cycle restarts.

Within each kalpa, time is further divided into manvantaras and chatur-yugas (also called maha-yugas). Each chatur-yuga consists of four ages that mark a progressive moral and spiritual decline:

Satya Yuga (1,728,000 years) – the golden age of truth and virtue. Treta Yuga (1,296,000 years) – righteousness begins to diminish. Dvapara Yuga (864,000 years) – moral decay becomes more evident. Kali Yuga (432,000 years) – the age of spiritual decline and conflict, which Hindu tradition holds is the current era.

When the Kali Yuga ends, the cycle restarts – an eternal rhythm of moral ascent and descent. The astronomer Carl Sagan famously noted that Hindu cosmology is unique among world religions in operating on timescales that correspond to those of modern scientific cosmology, with cycles far exceeding the known age of the Earth and Sun.

Samkhya and the philosophical substrate

Beneath the mythological imagery lies serious philosophical reasoning. The Samkhya school, one of the six orthodox schools of Hindu philosophy, provides a framework in which creation arises from the interplay of two eternal principles: Purusha (consciousness) and Prakriti (primal matter). Prakriti is composed of three gunas – sattva (purity/preservation), rajas (activity/creation), and tamas (inertia/destruction). When their equilibrium is disturbed, the process of cosmic creation begins. This is not creation from nothing; it is a transformation of what already eternally exists.

The Advaita Vedanta school adds another layer, arguing that material creation is maya – an illusion that conceals the ultimate reality of Brahman (the absolute). On this view, the cosmic cycles of creation and destruction are real only from the standpoint of embodied beings trapped in ignorance; from the perspective of Brahman, nothing is ever truly created or destroyed.

Buddhist cosmology: impermanence on a cosmic scale

Buddhist cosmology shares the Indian commitment to cyclical time but reorients it around the tradition’s core philosophical concerns: suffering (dukkha), impermanence (anicca), and the workings of karma. Where Hindu cosmology tends toward elaborate narratives of divine creation, Buddhism focuses on the structural and psychological dimensions of existence.

World-systems and their cycles

According to Buddhist teachings, the universe consists of an inconceivable number of world-systems (lokadhatu), each of which passes through four phases: formation, endurance, dissolution, and emptiness. This cycle repeats endlessly. Importantly, Buddhism holds that there is no discoverable first point of origin – the process has been going on without any identifiable beginning.

The basic unit of cosmic time in Buddhism is the mahakalpa (great eon), which consists of four intermediate phases of twenty kalpas each. The scale is vast: a single intermediate eon is said to represent the time it takes for the human lifespan to fluctuate from ten years to 80,000 years and back again, changing by one year every century. These numbers, while symbolic, underscore the tradition’s emphasis on the immense depth of cosmic time.

The structure of a world-system

Each individual world-system in Buddhist cosmology is centered on Mount Meru, a cosmic mountain surrounded by concentric rings of continents and oceans. Our human world (Jambudvipa) is one of four continents surrounding Meru. This model is shared with Hindu cosmology and reflects a broader pan-Indian cosmographic tradition.

What distinguishes the Buddhist model is its scale of spatial cosmology. One thousand world-systems form a “small chiliocosm”; a million form a “medium dichiliocosm”; and a billion world-systems together constitute a “great trichiliocosm” – a concept that prefigures, in its own way, the modern understanding of galactic superclusters. These groupings are not synchronized; they evolve and dissolve at different rates, ensuring that the overall fabric of existence is never entirely empty.

Cosmology as psychology

A distinctive feature of Buddhist cosmology is its psychological dimension. The universe is divided into thirty-one planes of existence, grouped into three broad realms: the realm of desire (kamadhatu), the realm of form (rupadhatu), and the formless realm (arupadhatu). These are not merely physical locations – they represent states of consciousness that beings experience according to their accumulated karma.

In this framework, the cosmos is as much an inner landscape as an outer one. Hell realms, hungry ghost realms, and heavenly abodes are understood as destinations shaped by one’s own mental and moral actions. The ultimate goal is not to reach a better cosmic location but to transcend the entire system of cyclic existence (samsara) through wisdom and compassion – as the Buddhas have done.

Jain cosmology: the eternal, self-governing universe

Jain cosmology stands apart from both Hindu and Buddhist models in one radical respect: it explicitly rejects the idea of a creator god. The universe (loka) is eternal, uncreated, and self-sustaining. As the ancient Jain text Mahapurana of Acharya Jinasena puts it, the doctrine that a creator made the world is ill-advised and should be rejected. The universe has always existed and always will.

The shape and structure of the loka

Jain texts describe the universe as having a shape resembling a cosmic human figure standing with arms on hips and legs apart – broad at the top and bottom and narrow in the middle. The loka is divided into three realms: the upper world (home to heavenly beings and, at its summit, the liberated souls or siddhas), the middle world (where humans, animals, and plants reside and where spiritual liberation is possible), and the lower world (a realm of suffering resulting from negative karma).

Surrounding the loka is the aloka – infinite, empty, non-world space devoid of all substances except pure space. This distinction between finite world-space and infinite non-world space is a unique feature of Jain cosmological thought.

Six eternal substances

Jainism explains the universe through six fundamental, eternal substances (dravyas): jiva (soul), pudgala (matter), dharma (principle of motion), adharma (principle of rest), akasha (space), and kala (time). The interplay of these substances accounts for all phenomena in the universe without the need for divine intervention. The principles of motion and rest (dharmastikaya and adharmastikaya) are particularly distinctive – they are unique to Jain philosophy and function as the enabling conditions for movement and stillness in the cosmos.

This framework aligns in a remarkable way with the modern scientific principle of conservation of energy and matter: the fundamental substance of the Jain universe neither increases nor decreases. It simply transforms.

The Kalacakra: cycles within an eternal cosmos

While the Jain universe does not undergo creation and destruction in the Hindu or Buddhist sense, it does experience cyclical changes in conditions. Time in Jainism is governed by the Kalacakra (cosmic wheel of time), which rotates endlessly through two half-cycles: the utsarpini (ascending phase of increasing prosperity, knowledge, and virtue) and the avasarpini (descending phase of increasing suffering, ignorance, and moral decline).

Each half-cycle is divided into six eras (aras) of unequal duration. Jain tradition holds that we are currently in the fifth era of a descending cycle – an age of sorrow where spiritual liberation is still possible but increasingly difficult. When the sixth and darkest era ends, the ascending phase begins, and conditions gradually improve. This alternation between decline and renewal continues forever.

Crucially, no divine or supernatural force governs these changes. They are spontaneous temporal shifts driven by the collective karma of living beings – making Jain cosmology one of the most rigorously naturalistic cosmological systems in all of pre-modern thought.

Convergences and contrasts

Looking at these three traditions side by side reveals both deep convergences and striking differences. All three share a commitment to cyclical time, an understanding that the cosmos is unimaginably vast and ancient, and a conviction that the moral and spiritual condition of living beings is intimately connected to the cosmic order. All three use the concept of karma as a mechanism linking individual action to cosmic consequences.

The differences are equally instructive. Hinduism provides a richly personified cosmos governed by divine agents. Buddhism depersonalizes the cosmos while psychologizing it – turning the structure of the universe into a map of consciousness. Jainism goes furthest in removing agency from the cosmic process altogether, presenting a universe that is eternal, uncreated, and governed entirely by natural law.

Modern science has found echoes – however imprecise – of these ancient ideas. The oscillating universe models of modern cosmology, which propose that the universe undergoes repeated cycles of expansion and contraction, bear a conceptual resemblance to the Hindu notion of cyclical kalpas. The vast scale of Buddhist world-systems anticipates the modern understanding of a universe containing billions of galaxies. And the Jain insistence on an uncreated, self-sustaining cosmos governed by conservation principles resonates with foundational assumptions in physics.

None of this means ancient Indian thinkers were doing modern science. They were doing philosophy – but philosophy of a kind that took the physical cosmos seriously as an object of rigorous, sustained inquiry.

Why Indian cosmology still matters

Indian cosmology matters today not because it provides empirically verifiable models of the universe – it doesn’t, and wasn’t intended to – but because it offers a fundamentally different way of thinking about time, existence, and our place in the cosmos. The Western tendency to think of time as a straight line, history as progress, and the universe as having a single story with a beginning and an end is not the only option. Indian cosmological traditions remind us that cyclical models of existence have their own intellectual coherence and philosophical depth.

They also demonstrate that the boundary between science and spirituality is not as rigid as modernity sometimes assumes. In Indian thought, understanding the cosmos is not separate from understanding the self. The structure of the universe mirrors the structure of consciousness, and knowledge of one leads naturally to knowledge of the other.
