What is the most basic “stuff” that everything in the physical world is made of? Not atoms, not quarks – but something even more fundamental, something that has no shape, no colour, no weight, and no properties of its own. This is the idea behind prime matter (materia prima), one of the most foundational – and most debated – concepts in the history of metaphysics. Rooted in Aristotle’s philosophy and refined by medieval thinkers like Thomas Aquinas, prime matter represents the indeterminate, purely potential substrate that underlies every material substance. Understanding it is key to understanding how philosophers have explained change, identity, and the very structure of the physical world.

What is prime matter?
Prime matter is the concept of an absolutely formless, featureless substrate that exists at the bottom of all material reality. In Aristotle’s hylomorphic framework, every physical object is a compound of matter and form. A bronze statue, for instance, has bronze as its matter and a particular shape as its form. But bronze itself can be analysed further – it is a mixture of copper and tin, combined according to a certain ratio. If you keep pushing this analysis downward, asking what underlies each level of matter, you eventually arrive at a substrate that has no form or properties of its own. This is prime matter.
Unlike ordinary matter (such as wood, metal, or flesh), prime matter is not something you can observe, touch, or measure. It has no characteristics, no qualities, and no independent existence. As the Encyclopaedia Britannica explains, prime matter is a potential principle – passive and indeterminate – while form is the active, determining principle that actualises it. Prime matter only ever exists in combination with some form. You will never encounter it in a “raw” state because, by definition, it lacks every feature that would make it identifiable.
Prime matter as pure potentiality
The most important characteristic of prime matter is its nature as pure potentiality. In Aristotelian metaphysics, all reality can be divided along the axis of potentiality (what something can be) and actuality (what something is). A seed is potentially a tree. A block of marble is potentially a statue. Prime matter takes this logic to its extreme: it is potentiality with no actuality whatsoever.
What this means in practical terms is that prime matter is capable of receiving any substantial form. It can become water, air, gold, flesh, bone – anything at all. Its total lack of determination is precisely what gives it this unlimited receptivity. As scholars working in the Aristotelian tradition note, when you strip away every predicate and every property from a substance through conceptual analysis, what remains is a subject that is nothing in its own right – an entity whose every feature is owed to the form it currently possesses.
This is a remarkable metaphysical claim. Prime matter is not a “thing” in any ordinary sense. It is better understood as a principle – a metaphysical component that helps explain why material substances are the way they are, and why they can change into something else entirely.
Why prime matter cannot exist on its own
Because prime matter is pure potency, it can never exist independently. It always requires a substantial form to actualise it. Thomas Aquinas emphasised that mere potency toward existence is not enough for actual existence. Prime matter needs to be “activated” by form in order to constitute any real substance. A piece of iron, a drop of water, a living organism – each of these is prime matter actualised by a specific substantial form. Without that form, prime matter would be nothing at all, not even empty space.
This teaching created a genuine philosophical puzzle for medieval thinkers. If you stress the pure potentiality of prime matter too strongly, you risk the conclusion that it does not really exist. But if you grant it any positive character or actuality of its own, you risk turning it into a self-standing material entity – which contradicts the whole point of the concept. Aquinas navigated this tension by arguing that prime matter is a being in actuality, but not through itself – only through the form it receives.
Mutability: prime matter and the explanation of change
One of the central reasons philosophers posited prime matter in the first place was to explain substantial change – the kind of change where one substance ceases to exist and a new substance comes into being. Think of burning wood: the wood (one substance) is destroyed, and ash, smoke, and gases (new substances) come into existence. This is not merely a rearrangement of properties. Something fundamentally different has come to be.
Aristotle held that nothing comes from nothing (ex nihilo nihil fit). So when a substance is destroyed and a new one generated, something must persist through the change. In accidental changes – such as a wall being painted from white to blue – the substance (the wall) persists. But in substantial changes, the substance itself is what is being replaced. What persists, then? The answer is prime matter.
Prime matter is the continuous substrate that endures through every substantial transformation. When wood becomes ash, the prime matter that was actualised by the form of “wood” loses that form and receives the form of “ash.” The prime matter itself remains, providing continuity through the change. Without it, substantial change would be equivalent to annihilation followed by creation from nothing – a conclusion Aristotle and the Scholastics found unacceptable.
Mutability and passivity
Two related features of prime matter flow directly from its role in change: mutability and passivity.
Mutability refers to prime matter’s openness to receiving different forms. Because it has no fixed nature of its own, it can take on any substantial form – and it can lose any form it currently has. This is what makes the physical world changeable. Every material substance carries within its prime matter the inherent potential to become something else. As Aquinas noted, whenever prime matter exists under one form, it retains the privation – the absence – of every other form it is not currently bearing. This built-in privation is the root of all corruptibility in material things.
Passivity means that prime matter has no active role in determining what it becomes. It does not shape itself, direct its own transformation, or “choose” a form. It is entirely receptive. Form is the active, structuring principle; prime matter is the passive, receiving principle. This asymmetry is fundamental to hylomorphism. Form gives; matter receives. Without something to act upon it – an external agent imposing a new form – prime matter would remain forever in whatever state it happens to be in.
The relationship between prime matter and form
Every material substance, in the Aristotelian-Thomistic view, is a composite of two co-principles: prime matter and substantial form. Neither one is a substance by itself. The substance – this tree, that horse, this human being – is the compound of the two.
Form is what makes a substance the kind of thing it is. The substantial form of a human being is the rational soul; the substantial form of water is whatever makes water water rather than air or earth. Matter, on the other hand, is what makes the substance a material thing – something that occupies space, undergoes change, and exists in the physical world. Together, the two principles account for both the identity and the materiality of every natural substance.
Aristotle made clear that form is not merely physical shape. A dead body may have the same shape as a living one, but Aristotle would say that a corpse is a body only in an extended, metaphorical sense – it has lost the form (the soul) that made it a living organism. Form is essence: the definition of what a thing fundamentally is.
Why matter and form are inseparable
In the natural world, matter and form never exist apart from each other. There is no formless matter wandering around, and there are no disembodied forms floating in physical space (Aristotle’s explicit rejection of Plato’s theory of separately existing Forms). Every bit of matter is always already informed by some form, and every natural form is always realised in some matter. This mutual dependence is what makes their union so tight – Aristotle compared it to the inseparability of wax and its shape.
This inseparability has an important consequence: prime matter is not a separate “ingredient” that gets mixed with form the way flour gets mixed with water. It is a metaphysical principle – a constitutive aspect of material being, not a physical component that could be isolated in a laboratory.
Prime matter and individuation
One of the most philosophically significant roles assigned to prime matter is its function as a principle of individuation. The problem of individuation asks: what makes one individual thing numerically distinct from another individual of the same kind? Two human beings share the same substantial form (humanity), so form alone cannot explain why Socrates and Plato are different individuals. Something else must account for their distinctness.
In the Thomistic tradition, the answer lies in matter. According to Paul Symington’s analysis of Aquinas, prime matter serves as the fundamental principle that accounts for a thing being an individual – a “this” rather than a mere universal. Aquinas argues that while Socrates and Plato share the same form (“man”), they differ because their form is received in numerically distinct prime matter.
However, the story is more complicated than that. Since prime matter is itself completely indeterminate, it cannot by itself differentiate one individual from another – after all, one “portion” of featureless potentiality is no different from any other. This is why Aquinas introduces the further specification of designated matter (materia signata quantitate) – matter considered under determinate dimensions or quantity. It is matter as extended in space, as this particular body occupying this particular location, that ultimately grounds the numerical difference between individuals of the same species.
The tension with pure potentiality
This creates a deep philosophical tension. If prime matter is pure potentiality with no actuality of its own, how can it serve as the basis for individuating substances? Something with no features of its own seems poorly suited to explain what makes one thing different from another. Scholars in the Thomistic tradition have tried to resolve this paradox by arguing that prime matter’s role as individuator works precisely because of its maximal indeterminacy – it provides the “thisness” of a substance at the most basic ontological level, even though it has no specific character. The philosophical literature on this topic remains active and contested.
Prime matter and the metaphysics of permanence
Prime matter plays a dual role in explaining both change and permanence in the natural world. On one hand, it makes change possible: because every material substance contains prime matter, and prime matter is open to receiving new forms, no material substance is absolutely permanent. Everything in the physical world is, in principle, corruptible.
On the other hand, prime matter itself is permanent. It was traditionally held to be eternal – uncreated and indestructible in the natural order – because its generation or destruction would require yet another, more fundamental matter to underlie that change, leading to an infinite regress. The Stanford Encyclopedia of Philosophy notes that prime matter is omnipresent in the physical world: because it is the matter of the elements, and the elements are present in all more complex bodies, prime matter underlies every physical change that occurs.
This permanence of prime matter beneath all change is what provides metaphysical continuity to the natural world. Substances come and go, forms are gained and lost, but the underlying material potential endures. In this sense, prime matter is the metaphysical anchor of physical reality.
Modern relevance and ongoing debates
Prime matter may sound like an artefact of ancient and medieval thought, but it continues to attract serious philosophical attention. Some contemporary metaphysicians have explored whether prime matter might correspond to modern scientific concepts. One recent study in the Australasian Journal of Philosophy tested the hypothesis that prime matter could be identified with energy – both are featureless, partless, and serve as the underlying substrate for all physical transformations. While the question remains unresolved, the comparison shows that the philosophical motivations behind prime matter have not disappeared.
The revival of hylomorphism in contemporary metaphysics has also brought renewed attention to prime matter’s role in individuation and composition. Modern hylomorphists seek a metaphysical framework that is lean enough to be compatible with naturalism while still explaining phenomena – like substantial change, persistence, and individual identity – that purely mechanistic ontologies struggle with.
Whether or not one accepts the existence of prime matter, the concept forces us to confront fundamental questions: What is the most basic level of material reality? Can change be explained without some persisting substrate? What makes one individual thing different from another? These are questions that remain as pressing today as they were in Aristotle’s Athens.
