Most people know Pythagoras from a geometry theorem. But the man himself was something far stranger and more ambitious than a mathematician. According to the Stanford Encyclopedia of Philosophy, Pythagoras was primarily famous in his own time as an expert on the fate of the soul after death, a founder of a strict religious way of life, and a teacher who believed the cosmos was structured according to moral principles and significant numerical relationships. Numbers, for him, were not calculation tools – they were the hidden architecture of reality itself.

Who was Pythagoras?

Pythagoras of Samos was born around 570 BCE on the Greek island of Samos, off the coast of present-day Turkey. He traveled widely – to Egypt, Babylonia, and perhaps Persia – absorbing the mathematical traditions of those ancient cultures. Around 530 BCE, he settled in Croton, a Greek colony in southern Italy, where he founded a philosophical and religious community that would become one of the most influential schools in ancient thought. According to Wikipedia, the community’s members were bound by vows, shared possessions in common, followed strict dietary rules, and observed religious rituals in a setting that resembled a monastery as much as a school. Pythagoras himself wrote nothing. Everything we know about his teachings comes through later accounts, which makes reconstructing his exact views a challenge that scholars still debate.

“All is number”: the philosophical revolution

Before Pythagoras, earlier Greek thinkers had proposed physical substances – water, air, or some indefinite matter – as the fundamental principle (arche) underlying the universe. Pythagoras broke with this tradition by proposing something radically different: numbers. As Science News explains, Pythagoras was the first thinker to seriously put mathematics to work as the key to unlocking the mysteries of the cosmos, elevating it from a practical tool to a mode of spiritual inquiry. His followers believed that reality was not made of any physical stuff but of mathematical structure – that numbers were the fundamental essence of everything.

This was not mathematics in the modern sense of abstract calculation. As noted in JRank’s encyclopedia of science, the Pythagoreans understood number and its qualities – polarity, harmony, proportion – as archetypal principles underlying all physical reality. Mathematics, in their view, was discovered rather than invented, and it had the power to reflect the essential nature of reality itself. Pythagoras was also, according to the same source, the first person to call the universe a kosmos – a Greek word whose root relates to order and beauty, implying that the universe is not chaos but a structured, beautiful whole.

Numbers with meaning: Pythagorean numerology

According to Britannica, the Pythagoreans invested specific numbers with mystical properties. The number 1 represented unity and the origin of all things. The number 2 symbolized the female principle, 3 the male, and their union in 5 represented marriage. The number 4 stood for justice. The most perfect number was 10, because it was the sum of the first four integers: 1 + 2 + 3 + 4. This gave rise to the tetractys – a triangular arrangement of ten dots that was considered so sacred that the Pythagoreans reportedly swore their oaths upon it. Socrates Journey notes that the three fundamental musical harmonies were themselves generated by these first four numbers, linking the mystical significance of 10 to the structure of sound itself.

The Pythagoreans also developed a Table of Opposites – ten pairs of contrasting principles that they believed governed the structure of reality: limit and unlimited, odd and even, one and many, right and left, male and female, rest and motion, straight and curved, light and darkness, good and evil, square and oblong. Britannica’s analysis of Pythagorean metaphysics explains that the principle of limit (represented by odd numbers) was seen as an active force imposing order, harmony, and cosmos upon the unlimited (represented by even numbers). All these opposites somehow fit together within the cosmos – and, on a smaller scale, within each individual person.

The music of the spheres

Perhaps the most poetic and enduring of all Pythagorean ideas is the concept known as the harmony of the spheres. Wikipedia’s article on Pythagoras describes it as the belief that the planets and stars move according to mathematical equations that correspond to musical notes, producing an inaudible symphony. According to legend, Pythagoras first recognized the mathematical basis of music when he passed a blacksmith’s workshop and noticed that the sounds of hammers of different weights produced harmonious or discordant tones in simple numerical ratios. He extended this insight to the cosmos itself.

Science News describes the Pythagorean reasoning: the heavenly bodies move rapidly, and anything moving quickly makes sound. If the ratios of the planets’ speeds correspond to the ratios of the musical scale, the cosmos itself would emit a kind of music. As Aristotle later summarized, the Pythagoreans thought the whole heaven to be a musical scale and number. The reason we cannot hear this cosmic music? The Pythagoreans explained that the sound has been in our ears since the moment of birth and is therefore indistinguishable from silence. While Aristotle rejected this explanation, the underlying idea – that the universe is governed by mathematical ratios – proved enormously influential. This link between music and mathematics was confirmed empirically: Britannica notes that the Pythagoreans discovered that musical harmony is related to simple whole-number ratios, with a string half as long as another producing the deeply harmonious interval now called the octave.

The soul, its journey, and metempsychosis

Alongside his cosmological ideas, Pythagoras held a radical doctrine about the human soul. According to the Stanford Encyclopedia of Philosophy, the teaching most securely identified with Pythagoras is metempsychosis – the transmigration of the soul – which holds that every soul is immortal and, upon death, enters into a new body, whether human or animal. This belief was apparently not merely theoretical for Pythagoras. One of the earliest surviving references, preserved by Xenophanes, records that Pythagoras once claimed to recognize the soul of a deceased friend in the yelping of a beaten dog.

Le Premier ร‰tat’s analysis of the Pythagorean doctrine highlights that metempsychosis was not just a metaphysical claim but a practical one with real ethical consequences. If souls can inhabit animal bodies, then killing and eating animals becomes morally problematic. This is why Pythagoreans practiced vegetarianism and abstained from animal sacrifice – the soul of any creature might be a transmigrated human soul. The doctrine also implied that one’s moral choices in this life have consequences in future lives. Greek Reporter explains that in Pythagorean thought, the soul purifies itself by journeying through different lives, learning and growing spiritually across successive incarnations – a cycle that continues until the soul achieves full purification.

Purification and the Pythagorean way of life

The doctrine of the soul gave Pythagorean ethics its distinctive character. Philopedia’s entry on Pythagoreanism describes how virtue was conceived as a kind of inner harmony – reason governing desire and spirit according to measure, just as mathematical proportion creates harmony in music. The Pythagorean community practiced moderation, self-control, truthfulness, and reverence for the divine. Daily life included morning recollection, evening self-examination, strict dietary rules, shared property, and communal meals. The goal was not mere moral respectability but something deeper: the harmonization of the soul with the mathematical order of the cosmos. By living in proportion and balance, the soul could ascend rather than descend in its cycle of reincarnations.

Britannica’s overview of Pythagoreanism describes how this vision encompassed a parallelism between the macrocosm (the universe) and the microcosm (the individual human being). To understand the cosmos was to understand oneself; to align oneself with cosmic harmony was to live rightly. Science, philosophy, music, and ethics were not separate pursuits – they were all aspects of the same fundamental inquiry into the nature of order, beauty, and the divine.

The Pythagorean community: between school and brotherhood

Wikipedia’s article on Pythagoreanism notes that the community Pythagoras founded at Croton around 530 BCE divided over time into two groups: the akousmatikoi (“those who listen”), who focused on religious ritual and oral precepts, and the mathematikoi (“those who learn”), who engaged more deeply in mathematical and theoretical study. This distinction reflects the dual character of Pythagoreanism itself – simultaneously a religious brotherhood and an intellectual school. Members took their philosophical commitments seriously enough to have faced violent persecution. By around 450 BCE, attacks on Pythagorean communities across southern Italy resulted in the burning of meeting houses and the death of many members. The survivors scattered across Greece, carrying Pythagorean ideas with them.

Pythagoras’s legacy: from Plato to Kepler

World History Encyclopedia describes how Pythagorean thought significantly shaped Plato’s philosophy – including the concept of an ultimate truth not subject to opinion, the soul’s immortality, and the necessity of salvation through philosophy. Plato’s Timaeus directly engages with Pythagorean cosmology, and his Phaedo and Republic echo the doctrine of metempsychosis. Through Plato, Pythagorean ideas entered the mainstream of Western philosophy and never really left.

The reach of these ideas extended well into the scientific revolution. Wikipedia records that Johannes Kepler explicitly considered himself a Pythagorean: he titled his book on planetary motion Harmonices Mundi (Harmonics of the World) and called Pythagoras the “grandfather” of all Copernicans. Copernicus himself cited Pythagorean thinkers as the most important influence on his heliocentric model of the universe. Humanities West traces a direct line of influence from Pythagoras through Plato to scientists such as Copernicus, Kepler, Galileo, Newton, and Einstein – all of whom, in their different ways, pursued the Pythagorean conviction that the cosmos is mathematically ordered and that uncovering that order is the highest form of inquiry. Albert Einstein himself suggested that a scientist could be “a Platonist or a Pythagorean” in regarding mathematical simplicity as an indispensable tool of research.

What began as a mystical religious community in a southern Italian city-state became, over time, one of the most consequential philosophical movements in human history. Pythagoras proposed that beneath the surface of a changing, chaotic world there is a stable, harmonious, numerical order – and that human beings, by understanding that order and aligning themselves with it, can participate in something divine.
