Science and philosophy are often treated as separate disciplines today, each with its own methods, institutions, and communities. But this separation is relatively recent. For most of human intellectual history, what we now call “science” was simply a branch of philosophy. The questions scientists ask-about the nature of reality, the structure of the universe, and the foundations of knowledge-were once philosophical questions, and in many ways, they still are. Understanding the relationship between science and philosophy is not just an academic exercise; it reveals how human knowledge has evolved and why both disciplines continue to need each other.

From natural philosophy to modern science
The story of science and philosophy begins as one story, not two. The term “natural philosophy” preceded the current usage of “natural science.” Empirical science historically developed out of philosophy, or more specifically, out of natural philosophy. From Aristotle in ancient Greece through to Isaac Newton in the seventeenth century, thinkers who investigated the physical world did so under the banner of philosophy.
Today, we think of Galileo, Kepler, Harvey, Boyle, and Newton as trailblazing scientists, while we think of Bacon, Descartes, Hobbes, Locke, and Spinoza as philosophers. But that division is something we impose on the past-it is deeply anachronistic. In reality, these figures worked across what we would now consider disciplinary boundaries. Newton’s most famous work, Philosophiae Naturalis Principia Mathematica (1687), translates to “Mathematical Principles of Natural Philosophy,” reflecting the then-current usage of the term as a systematic study of nature.
So when did the split happen? The 19th century established the term “science” as distinct from philosophy, marked by a rigorously empirical and experimental approach, the founding of various scientific institutions, and the emergence of many modern sub-disciplines. The word “scientist” itself was coined in 1834 by William Whewell, a Cambridge natural philosopher, to replace older terms like “natural philosopher.” Before that, “science” simply meant knowledge or study, in keeping with its Latin origin.
The role of the Scientific Revolution
The Scientific Revolution of the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries was the crucial turning point. Kepler and Galileo made careful observations and performed experiments, but they also adopted a metaphysical view that nature’s workings are governed by mathematical laws. This philosophical assumption-that the universe is structured mathematically-was not something they derived from experiments. It was a philosophical commitment that guided their scientific work.
But then science broke away from metaphysics and philosophy. Newton, despite relying heavily on philosophical reasoning in the Principia, sought to present his work as purely inductive science. Because of Newton’s enormous prestige, later natural philosophers assumed that legitimate science had to be based entirely on induction from observed phenomena. Philosophy and metaphysics came to be seen as unnecessary baggage. Thus modern science was born, and natural philosophy-which had given rise to modern science in the first place-was left behind.
The ongoing debate: does science need philosophy?
The separation between science and philosophy has led to a persistent question: does science still need philosophy? Some prominent scientists have answered with a firm “no.” Stephen Hawking declared philosophy “dead,” arguing that it has not kept up with modern developments in science, particularly physics. Physicist Lawrence Krauss has similarly suggested that when it comes to deep questions about quantum mechanics, the reflections of physicists are more useful than those of philosophers.
These views represent what philosopher Sebastian de Haro calls three common arguments against philosophy’s usefulness for science: the claim that philosophy is dead, the historical challenge to produce examples of philosophy benefiting science, and the argument that the two disciplines simply have different subject matters and methods.
The fallacy of anti-philosophicalism
Here is the irony: to deny the need for philosophy, one must actually do philosophy. Declaring that philosophy is useless for science requires making claims about what science is, what its goals are, and what methods are legitimate-and those are philosophical claims. One can only argue about what those goals and subject matter should be by doing philosophy-more specifically, philosophy of science.
Every scientific enterprise rests on assumptions that are not themselves scientific but philosophical. When a physicist assumes that nature operates according to consistent laws, that experiments performed under the same conditions will yield the same results, or that simpler explanations are preferable to complex ones, these are philosophical commitments, not empirical findings. Science cannot do without philosophy because there are philosophical stances implicit in the presuppositions and goals of any scientific paradigm and in how theories are connected to reality.
How philosophy contributes to science
The claim that philosophy has never contributed anything to science does not hold up under scrutiny. Philosophy’s contribution to science takes at least four forms: the clarification of scientific concepts, the critical assessment of scientific assumptions or methods, the formulation of new concepts and theories, and the fostering of dialogue between different sciences as well as between science and society.
Conceptual clarification
Conceptual clarifications improve the precision and utility of scientific terms and also lead to novel experimental investigations, because the choice of a given conceptual framework strongly constrains how research is conducted. Consider a concept like “species” in biology. Biologists use the term constantly, yet defining what exactly counts as a species involves philosophical analysis of categories, boundaries, and natural kinds-not just empirical observation.
Similarly, in physics, questions about the nature of time, causation, and measurement are not ones that laboratory experiments alone can resolve. Fundamental questions such as the definition of time have been enriched by the work of philosophers, with analyses of temporal irreversibility and closed temporal curves helping to clarify conceptual confusion in physics.
Foundations of quantum mechanics
Quantum mechanics provides one of the clearest examples of philosophy and science working together. Einstein was doing the philosophy that physics required at that point in time. He was reflecting on and critically engaging with the conceptual foundations of quantum theory. To do that, he needed philosophical tools, but he was of course also doing physics. The famous Einstein-Podolsky-Rosen (EPR) thought experiment was a philosophical argument about the completeness of quantum mechanics that eventually led to real experimental tests-including John Bell’s inequality tests, which have had profound consequences for our understanding of reality.
Ethics and the limits of science
Science tells us what we can do, but philosophy helps us think about what we should do. As technologies in genetic engineering, artificial intelligence, and neuroscience advance rapidly, the need for philosophical reflection on ethical boundaries becomes urgent. Questions about informed consent in medical research, the moral status of animal experimentation, and the social implications of surveillance technology are not scientific questions-they are philosophical ones that directly shape how science is practiced.
How science contributes to philosophy
The relationship is not one-directional. Scientific discoveries have repeatedly transformed philosophical thinking, sometimes overturning assumptions that philosophers held for centuries.
Rethinking reality and knowledge
Quantum mechanics challenged traditional philosophical notions of determinism-the idea that every event is the inevitable result of prior causes. Before quantum physics, most philosophers and scientists assumed the universe was deterministic. Quantum theory introduced genuine randomness at the subatomic level, forcing philosophers to rethink basic categories of causation and probability.
Evolutionary biology similarly transformed philosophical thinking about human nature. Before Darwin, most philosophical accounts of humanity assumed a fixed, unchanging essence. Evolution revealed that human beings are the product of a long, contingent natural process, requiring philosophers to rethink ethics, morality, and what it means to be human.
Neuroscience has raised new questions about consciousness and free will. If our thoughts and decisions can be correlated with brain activity, what does that mean for the traditional philosophical concept of a freely choosing self? These are questions that neither science nor philosophy can answer alone-they require both empirical evidence and conceptual analysis.
The mutual dependence of science and philosophy
Science gave philosophy a way of empirically testing theories and concepts, while philosophy helped develop the scientific method used today. Philosophy also helps determine what areas science can and cannot test, drawing the boundary between physical and metaphysical questions.
Bertrand Russell captured one aspect of this relationship in 1918 when he suggested that science is what you more or less know, and philosophy is what you do not know-philosophy being that part of science which people choose to have opinions about but do not yet have settled knowledge of. On this view, philosophical questions often become scientific ones once we develop the tools to investigate them empirically. But new philosophical questions always emerge at the frontier of knowledge.
Philosophy and science are best understood as located on a continuum. They share the tools of logic, conceptual analysis, and rigorous argumentation. The boundary between them is not a wall but a zone of productive interaction.
Why the separation persists-and why it matters
If science and philosophy are so closely connected, why do they often seem so far apart today? Part of the answer lies in institutional structures. Modern universities divide knowledge into departments, and scientists and philosophers are trained differently, publish in different journals, and attend different conferences. Prior to the nineteenth century, those who are now regarded as scientists were referred to as natural philosophers. With empiricism, science was claimed to be a superior form of knowledge to philosophy, and natural philosophy was marginalized.
This separation has real consequences. Scientists who ignore philosophical questions may operate within unexamined assumptions that limit their work. Philosophers who ignore scientific developments may produce theories that are disconnected from empirical reality. Understanding the relationship between science and philosophy is a first key step toward developing a productive collaboration between the two fields.
Toward a renewed partnership
There are encouraging signs that the two disciplines are reconnecting. In recent decades, interdisciplinary fields like philosophy of biology, philosophy of physics, and neuroethics have flourished. Scientists increasingly recognize that foundational questions about their disciplines-what counts as a good explanation, what makes a model reliable, how to interpret statistical evidence-are philosophical questions that benefit from philosophical training.
At the same time, philosophers are engaging more seriously with scientific findings, recognizing that armchair speculation disconnected from empirical knowledge has limited value. The most productive philosophical work today is often deeply informed by the relevant science, whether it concerns the foundations of quantum theory, the nature of biological species, or the ethics of emerging technologies.
Major scientific figures like Galileo, Newton, and Darwin all engaged deeply with philosophical concepts in their work. None of them were embarrassed to acknowledge that what they were doing was partly philosophy-it was also part of science. If the founders of modern science saw no need for a sharp division between the two, perhaps we should reconsider ours.
