Long before neuroscience had a name, Aristotle was already asking the questions that define it: How do we perceive the world around us? What is memory, and how does the mind think? In the 4th century BC, he produced what remains one of the most ambitious and systematic attempts to understand the human mind – not through abstract speculation, but through careful observation of living beings. His approach was grounded in biology, anchored in function, and remarkably ahead of its time. Understanding Aristotle’s psychology means understanding how he saw the soul, not as a ghost trapped in a body, but as the very life of the body itself.

The soul as the form of the body
Aristotle’s psychology is inseparable from his concept of the psyche (ψυχή), the Greek word we translate as “soul.” But his usage is nothing like the religious notion of an immortal, disembodied spirit. For Aristotle, the soul is “the actuality of a body that has life” – it is what makes a living thing living. A body without a soul is not a sleeping person; it is simply matter. The soul is the body’s capacity to carry out the activities that define life: growth, nutrition, sensation, movement, and thought.
This framework comes from Aristotle’s broader theory of hylomorphism, which holds that every physical thing is a combination of matter (hyle) and form (morphe). For living beings, the soul is the form – not the shape, but the organizing principle that makes the body function as a living organism. Aristotle takes psychology to be the branch of science that investigates the soul and its properties, treating the soul as a general principle of life, which means his psychology covers not just humans but all animate beings, including plants and animals.
This is a decisive break from Plato, who treated the soul as a separate, pre-existing substance imprisoned in the body. For Aristotle, the idea of a soul floating free of its body makes no more sense than asking for the “cutting ability” of a knife without the knife. The soul is not an independently existing substance – it is linked to the body as its form, not a separate substance inside another substance of a different kind.
A hierarchy of soul: from plants to humans
Aristotle organizes living beings into a hierarchy based on the capacities of their souls. Plants have the capacity for nourishment and reproduction – the minimum that any living organism must possess. Lower animals have, in addition, the powers of sense-perception and self-motion. Humans have all these as well as intellect.
These capacities are nested: any creature with a higher capacity will also have all of the lower ones, but not vice versa. A plant cannot perceive; a dog cannot reason in the way humans do. Any creature with reason will also have perception; any creature with perception will also have the ability to take on nutrition and to reproduce – but the converse does not hold. This hierarchy is not merely a classification system. It reflects Aristotle’s conviction that the soul’s complexity grows in proportion to the complexity of the living form it animates.
Sensation and perception: more than passive reception
Central to Aristotle’s psychology is his account of sensation (aisthesis). He identifies five senses – sight, sound, smell, taste, and touch – and devotes careful attention to how each one works. But for Aristotle, sensation is not simply the passive impression of the external world on the body. Perception occurs when the senses come into contact with external objects, but it requires a medium – such as air or water – through which sensory information is transmitted. Each sense is capable of perceiving a specific range of stimuli, for instance, the eye perceives colour.
What makes Aristotle’s account particularly sophisticated is his notion of the common sense (koine aisthesis). Individual senses operate in isolation – the eye sees, the ear hears – but we experience the world as unified. There is a faculty Aristotle calls the “central sense” that unifies these sensations into perceptions of a single object. When you see and hear a bird at the same time, it is the common sense that binds these into one experience. This is also the faculty responsible for detecting cross-modal properties like motion, shape, and number – qualities that cannot be picked up by any one sense alone.
Aristotle also draws an important distinction between proper sensibles (qualities unique to one sense, like colour for sight) and common sensibles (qualities accessible to more than one sense, like size or movement). One can tell whether something is moving either by watching it or by feeling it, and so motion is a “common sensible.” This analysis anticipates centuries of debate in the philosophy of perception.
Imagination: the bridge between sensation and thought
Imagination (phantasia) occupies a distinctive and somewhat elusive role in Aristotle’s psychology. It is neither sensation nor thought, but sits between the two. According to Aristotle, imagination is the capacity to produce or recall mental images in the absence of the original sensory stimulus. Imagination is a movement resulting from an actual exercise of a power of sense – and because imaginations remain in the organs of sense and resemble sensations, animals in their actions are largely guided by them.
Aristotle is clear that imagination can deceive us – it can produce images that do not correspond to reality – whereas sensation, when functioning properly, does not lie. This is an important distinction: sensation gives us direct contact with the world; imagination gives us representations of it, which may or may not be accurate. Imagination also plays an essential role in desire and action. For Aristotle, an animal or person typically acts on the basis of what they imagine to be desirable or harmful – making phantasia a crucial link between perception and motivation.
Memory and recollection: time-stamped traces
Aristotle’s treatment of memory (mneme) is developed primarily in his short treatise De Memoria et Reminiscentia (On Memory and Recollection), part of the collection known as the Parva Naturalia – a group of short, empirically oriented works that investigate phenomena common to soul and body. This work has been called the first sustained treatment of memory in the Western tradition.
For Aristotle, memory is an affection of the common sense-faculty, which can distinguish between fresh images of sensation or thought and the impressed images persisting from previous experiences. Crucially, memory always involves a sense of time. To remember something is not simply to have a mental image – it is to recognize that image as a copy of something that happened in the past. This “perception of time” is what separates genuine memory from imagination.
Aristotle also distinguishes memory from recollection (anamnesis). Memory is something that can happen spontaneously – a face comes to mind unbidden. Recollection is active and deliberate: it involves a kind of reasoning, working through associations to retrieve a stored experience. Aristotle’s account of recollection has been described as the ancient formulation of the laws of association of ideas – the principle that we retrieve memories by following chains of similarity, contrast, or contiguity. This insight would resurface powerfully in Enlightenment-era philosophy and later in modern associationist psychology.
There is also a physiological dimension to Aristotle’s account. Aristotle defines memory as the possession of a perception after time has passed, and he grounds his discussion of recollection in terms of physical movements within the body. Memory, for him, is not purely mental – it is embodied, a feature of the whole organism.
The intellect: the mind’s highest capacity
The crowning element of Aristotle’s psychology is his account of intellect (nous). Thought is what distinguishes human beings from all other animals, and Aristotle devotes considerable attention to how it works. Thought, like sensation, is a matter of making judgments – but sensation concerns particulars, while intellectual knowledge is of universals. When you see a specific horse, that is sensation; when you grasp what “horse” means as a concept applicable to all horses, that is intellect at work.
In the most discussed – and most debated – part of De Anima, Aristotle introduces a distinction between two forms of intellect. The passive intellect (or possible intellect) is the receptive capacity – it is the mind’s potential to think, in the same way that a blank surface has the potential to receive any impression. The active intellect (nous poiêtikos) is what actually brings this potential to life. In De Anima iii 5, Aristotle characterizes the active mind as “separate and unaffected and unmixed, being in its essence actuality” and also as “deathless and everlasting.” This passage has generated controversy for over two millennia, with interpreters debating whether Aristotle means a capacity of the individual human soul or something more universal and divine.
What is clear is that thinking, for Aristotle, operates by a process analogous to perception: just as the eye receives the visible form of an object without the matter (you see the redness of an apple, not the apple’s flesh), the intellect receives the intelligible form of a thing without its matter. Just as perception involves the reception of a sensible form by a suitably qualified sensory faculty, so thinking involves the reception of an intelligible form by a suitably qualified intellectual faculty. In both cases, knowing is a kind of becoming – the knower, in a sense, becomes the thing known.
Aristotle also distinguishes practical intellect from theoretical intellect. Practical intellect governs deliberation and action – it figures out what to do. Theoretical intellect is concerned with understanding things as they are, for the sake of knowledge itself. This distinction maps onto the difference between wisdom applied to life and wisdom pursued for its own sake, a theme Aristotle develops extensively in his ethical writings.
Why Aristotle’s psychology still matters
Aristotle’s approach to the mind was unlike anything that had come before. He refused to treat the soul as a mysterious, other-worldly entity and instead grounded it firmly in biology and function. By doing so, he created a framework that could account for everything from how a plant absorbs nutrients to how a human being grasps a mathematical proof – all as expressions of the same underlying principle of life. His analyses of perception, imagination, memory, and intellect laid foundations that medieval philosophers built upon and that modern cognitive scientists still find themselves in conversation with. The hylomorphic soul, the common sense, the active-passive intellect distinction, the associative theory of recollection – these are not museum pieces. They are live contributions to questions we are still asking.
