Few philosophers of the twentieth century shook the foundations of Western thought as decisively as Willard Van Orman Quine (1908-2000). Working out of Harvard for most of his career, Quine did not simply refine existing ideas – he dismantled some of the most comfortable assumptions in the theory of knowledge. He challenged the centuries-old division between truths known through meaning alone and truths known through experience. He argued that our knowledge does not rest on fixed foundations but floats in an interconnected web of beliefs, all of it – including logic and mathematics – subject to revision. And he insisted that epistemology, the study of knowledge, should be done the way science is done: empirically, not from some privileged armchair position above experience. These three moves – the critique of the analytic-synthetic distinction, the web-of-belief model, and the naturalization of epistemology – constitute what scholars rightly call Quine’s revolution.

The analytic-synthetic distinction: what was at stake

To understand why Quine’s critique mattered, it helps to be clear about what he was attacking. The analytic-synthetic distinction divides statements into two types. Analytic propositions are true purely by virtue of meaning – “All bachelors are unmarried” is the standard example. No investigation of the world is needed; you only need to understand the words. Synthetic propositions, by contrast, get their truth from how the world actually is – “The cat is on the mat” requires you to look. This distinction was made systematic by Immanuel Kant and became central to the logical positivists of the early twentieth century, especially the Vienna Circle. For the positivists, analytic truths underpinned logic and mathematics, while synthetic truths covered empirical science. The two domains were cleanly separated – or so it seemed.

Quine is best known for rejecting this distinction, and the rejection carries sweeping consequences. If there are no truly analytic truths – no statements immune to empirical revision – then the claimed separation between logic and experience collapses, and with it the positivist picture of knowledge itself.

“Two dogmas of empiricism”: Quine’s landmark attack

Quine’s 1951 essay “Two Dogmas of Empiricism” is one of the most-cited papers in all of twentieth-century philosophy. In it, he targets two assumptions he regards as dogmas – articles of faith dressed up as philosophical truths.

The first dogma: the analytic-synthetic divide

The first dogma is simply the belief that the analytic-synthetic distinction is coherent and defensible. Quine’s argument is that every attempt to define “analytic” turns out to be circular. To say a statement is analytic is to say it is true by meaning. But to explain “meaning” you appeal to synonymy – two expressions meaning the same thing. And to explain synonymy you need interchangeability without changing truth value, which requires necessity, which brings you back to analyticity. Quine argues that all attempts to define and understand analyticity are circular, and therefore the notion should be rejected. You cannot escape the circle: analyticity, synonymy, and necessity each depend on the others, and none is independently explained.

The second dogma: reductionism

The second dogma is reductionism – the belief that every meaningful statement can, in principle, be broken down into elementary observation sentences, each facing the tribunal of experience individually. Quine rejects this. Individual sentences, he argues, do not meet experience one by one. According to Quine’s “confirmation holism,” our statements about the external world face the tribunal of sense experience not individually, but only as a corporate body. A single sentence is never tested against experience in isolation – it is always embedded in a web of other beliefs, assumptions, and theories. This is the crucial pivot: if no sentence faces experience alone, then no sentence is ever simply “verified” or “falsified” by a single observation. And if that is true, the neat separation between analytic truths (which require no empirical test) and synthetic truths (which do) becomes impossible to maintain.

The web of belief: Quine’s holistic vision

Quine’s positive alternative to the two-dogma picture is his holistic model of knowledge, most famously captured in the metaphor of the web of belief. Quine’s view is that knowledge resembles a spiderweb: flexible, interdependent, and anchored only at the edges to experience. At the periphery of the web sit observation sentences – statements that connect most directly to sensory experience. Further toward the center lie scientific theories, and at the very core sit logic and mathematics, the beliefs most remote from direct experience and therefore the most resistant to revision.

The key insight is that when experience conflicts with our expectations, we are never forced to revise any single specific belief. Individual statements are not confirmed or disconfirmed in isolation, but only as part of an interconnected scientific theory. We can absorb an unwelcome observation by revising peripheral beliefs close to the point of contact, or by making adjustments deep in the web – even, in extreme cases, by revising logical principles. No belief, not even a law of logic, is in principle beyond revision. The choice of which belief to revise is guided by practical considerations: simplicity, coherence, and the preservation of as much of the existing system as possible.

This holistic picture also means that scientific and empirical knowledge functions as an integrated system, where revisions can propagate throughout the network to maintain coherence. No statement is immune to empirical pressure, and no statement draws its meaning in total isolation from the rest of the system. Meaning, for Quine, is always meaning within a theoretical context.

What this means for language

Quine’s holism has direct implications for how we understand language. On the traditional picture, words have fixed meanings, and statements are true or false based on those meanings plus the facts. On Quine’s picture, the meanings of words are not stable atoms – they are shaped by the entire web of beliefs in which the words play a role. Change the web, and the meanings shift too. This is why Quine is also associated with the indeterminacy of translation: the idea that there is no single correct way to translate between languages, because meaning is not a fixed quantity sitting in individual terms but is distributed across an entire theoretical system. There is, in other words, no “view from nowhere” on meaning – only the perspective afforded by one’s current web of belief.

Naturalizing epistemology: philosophy as a chapter of science

Quine’s critique of the analytic-synthetic distinction had a direct consequence for epistemology. If there are no analytic truths, there is no a priori knowledge – no knowledge secured purely by reason, independent of experience. Since traditional philosophical analysis of knowledge fails, those wishing to study knowledge ought to employ natural scientific methods. This is the core of what Quine calls naturalized epistemology.

The traditional project of epistemology – since Descartes – was to ground knowledge in some foundation that was itself beyond doubt, and to justify science from outside science. Quine thought this project had failed, and that there was no good reason to continue pursuing it. The name for naturalized epistemology was coined in the twentieth century by Quine himself. Rather than asking how knowledge ought to be acquired from a prior philosophical standpoint, naturalized epistemology asks how knowledge is actually acquired – as a natural phenomenon, subject to empirical investigation.

Epistemology as psychology

In his landmark essay “Epistemology Naturalized” (1969), Quine argued for reconceiving epistemology as a branch of empirical psychology. The question is no longer “what must be true for knowledge to be possible?” but “how do human beings, as physical organisms, actually move from sensory input to theoretical output?” Scientific study of knowledge differs from philosophical study by focusing on how humans acquire knowledge rather than speculative analysis of it.

Central to Quine’s naturalistic account of knowledge is the idea that all our knowledge is in some way based upon stimulations of our sensory nerves. For most of what we know, the connection to sensory experience is indirect – it runs through layers of theory, language, and prior belief. Studying this connection empirically, rather than trying to reconstruct it logically, is what Quine means by naturalizing epistemology. Philosophy does not stand above science and justify it; philosophy is continuous with science, a fellow traveler rather than a foundation.

Circularity – and why Quine accepts it

A predictable objection is that using science to study the basis of science is circular. Quine does not deny the circularity. He argues that this appeal to science to ground the project of studying knowledge should not be dismissed for its circularity, since it is the best option available after ruling out traditional philosophical methods for their more serious flaws. The alternative – demanding a non-circular, purely philosophical foundation for science – has not been achieved in centuries of trying. Quine is willing to accept a modest, inevitable circularity rather than pretend it can be eliminated.

Legacy and continuing debate

Quine’s critique is widely viewed as a turning point in analytic philosophy, even among those who disagree with it. Paul Grice and P.F. Strawson responded in their 1956 paper “In Defense of a Dogma,” arguing that Quine’s skepticism about synonymy implies a broader skepticism about meaning itself – which most people find intuitively untenable. Others, like Hilary Putnam, accepted the historical importance of Quine’s arguments while questioning specific moves. Still others, such as Paul Boghossian, have argued that Quine’s rejection of the distinction remains widely accepted among philosophers, even if sometimes for poorly understood reasons.

More broadly, Quine’s naturalism has shaped contemporary philosophy of mind, cognitive science, and linguistics. His insistence that philosophy proceed empirically, without privileged access to analytic truths, helped dissolve the wall between philosophy and science. His holism finds echoes today in debates about model selection in machine learning and in the philosophy of scientific theory change. Quine advanced a thoroughgoing naturalism and holism according to which our knowledge of the world – including logic and mathematics – forms a single web of beliefs answerable only to empirical evidence as a whole. That single sentence still captures a philosophical vision that continues to provoke, inform, and challenge.
